Is Unlimited REALLY Unlimited?

People easily get carried away by the way unlimited and unmetered is promoted, but when it comes to reality they suffer, i had seen in many cases about this
 
I just wish the whole unlimited sham would die off already, but it looks to be here to stay for the time being at least. Any host that tries to sell me it though, and i'll just move on to a different host instead.

It does seem to be something laypeople get confused about often. Perhaps we, the hosting industry, needs to come up with a new term for unmetered to avoid the confusion. Unmetered is a real and viable solution whereas we all know unlimited is limited to profitability.
 
There's nothing unlimited in this world. You should steer clear of hosts who have "unlimited web space and bandwidth". This is worst than overselling. What if customers really think its unlimited and then keep uploading and uploading and using up your bandwidth? There's going to be a huge bill on you.

To sum it up, if someone could provide me with an unlimited hard drive, I'd like to see it.

ACtually have you calculated what is your real use ? If its less than the space provided why you are searching for overselling providers?

First calculate what is the usage required for your site, you can get 100's of companies providing that package at the nearest rate to unlimited offers
 
I have a small doubt is limited space really limited ? For an example a company offers 50 GB of space to a customer ( i am sure in that same server around 100 customer will be there) so it makes 50 X 100 = 5000 GB ? Which server company offers this space ? I am seeing that most of the reseller offers and hosting offers give 50 GB space as normal.

Any one can answer this ? Is it not same as unlimited ?

No.... This is called overselling. Selling or promising more resources than physically available.

Unlimited and Unmetered is the lack or any clear limits whatsoever, please read the thread..

I agree with you hivelocity but what other term can we use. hmmm I can't think of any as of right now.
 
well let me out it this way, yes unlimited is possible, because hard drives are always upgradeable, so hard drive space is never the problem.

Bandwidth can be also unlimited, all a host has to do is have a dedicated 10 MBPS port, but even a 10 MBPS port cuts out at 4 TB bandwidth a month.

Most likely if 1 account uses 1 TB bandwidth other things on the server will fail such as memory usage, or Apache crash due to to many process.
 
Your post shows a fundamental of your lack of knowledge on this issue.
Look up the definition of unlimited.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO OFFER.

Why is this so hard to grasp.

You can add more hard drives all you want. You do not have the resource to add unlimited drives because they don't exist. PERIOD.

There is no such think as unlimited bandwidth. PERIOD.

Anyone who offers is is a liar. Anyone who offers it is not honest with their clients.
 
I'm with Blue on this. I realize that it has been attempted to be justified on many forums, but the definition is what it is. Unlimited should be treated as impossible and a sales ploy.
 
Its simple all they do is put unlimited as your Disk or Bandwidth but not really it looks like unlimited for you.

BUt really all you are doing is like sharing Disk and Bandwidth with others like on the providers cpanel or what ever there its like for example lets say:

Disk Space: 50000(50BG)/100000(100GB)
Then when they go over its like
Disk Space: 100000(100BG)/100000(100GB)

or
Disk Space: 120000(120BG)/100000(100GB)
^^ See they went over..


Its just like a pice of paper over another on your cpanel with a diff number or simble
 
Yep... Right now unlimited hard drives don't exist, so there's a finite limit to the diskspace in a server.

Basically, it's a marketing gimmick that those host's are employing.
 
Yep, unlimited does not exist. People should be more realistic when looking at a host who offers unlimited space and bandwidth. Also, not to mention they should run when they see this.
 
Its like you really do have a limit but you just can't see it, and then when you go over the limit its basicly the whole server went over.
