Is Unlimited REALLY Unlimited?

WOW Didnt think this would generate so much interest?

I was just trying to get a little banter about the debate, I am pleased that so many people have so much interest and with differing opinions too... Should have posed the question on our own forums.

To be honest, I would purposely stay away from any plan that offers unlimited disk/bandwidth/etc. That usually means that their resources are over-allocated and you will actually get LESS than a plan offering set limits.

Its much better to have a guaranteed, set limit of XX than an unknown surprise limit of resources that you have to fight over.

I remember how I was once using this host that claimed to offer both free unlimited bandwidth and webspace, and then they did the old bait and switch after I was with them for a while! Because of this experience, I am always suspicious of anyone who makes these kind of claims, when half of them can't live up to it!

Do they offer a money-back-guarantee and did you go over the time period for your money back? Hope you find a better host.

i still confuse, in 2 years a go unlimited or unmetered will not s popular coz people never know what is this, but now? even best rate hosting offer unlimited/unmetered? wow? this kill small business to grow up??

If you have the determination to succeed your business will grow over time.
Try to adapt to the environment for now. Plus once the customers of unlimited plans realize the truth he will transfer to another host.

No, and this was actually some years back, when I wasn't near as careful or cautious with the webhosts I chose, but that place did treat me pretty well for a while, only for the bottom to fall out on me later on. The storage space I was using up really wasn't anything that bad, but I was counting on their unlimited bandwidth to keep up with the heavy traffic that my site was getting, but even the bandwidth wasn't as bad as you may think. Frankly, it just felt like being betrayed. They offered you free unlimited bandwidth, and then they tried to get extra money out of me for it.

Any company that allows unlimited disk space/bandwidth is already liying to you. So why would they not lie again the future. I wonder how long this whole "unlimited " thing will last.

Personally, I would advise not to deal with hosts offering unlimited disk space, bandwidth etc! It is impossible to provide customers with such "advantages"! These companies just deceive people!

The alarming part is how offers of "unlimited" space and bandwidth are becoming one of the new trends with a number of webhosts, and it just is becoming like some stupid marketing buzzword that they hope customers will blindly buy into, and sadly...many of them still do.

I agree with most of you, I think that you should have realistic parameters for your account, we sell accounts with clear limits on diskspace, however we do not limit the bandwidth, we just advise on the connection speed. This caps the limit anyway and we clearly state that. Also in our adverts throughout the internet we advise that the bandwidth alhough not limited by us or our datacenter does have a natural cap created by the connection speed and time. This bandwidth limit is so high, mind you, that it could be classed as unattainable.

I am pleased this thread has created so much discussion, I think that unlimited offers will be around forever; there is no escaping them as there is nothing more to offer. However, threads and discussions like this one, pay a timely reminder to all prospective web developers and upcoming hosts to ensure that they are accustomed with the terms such as 'unlimited' and 'unmetered' and that they apply common sense when going for one of these offers.

  • 'Unlimited' diskspace by its very definition is not possible, as it is a physical thing.
  • 'Unlimited' bandwidth is always capped by the connection speed and time so ensure you check what the connection speed is and do your math.

As we have seen there is a descrepancy in views as to the differences between 'unlimited' and 'unmetered'.
I myself cannot really see much difference, the natural limit of this bandwidth figure is still the same whether sold as unlimited or unmetered.

So in conclusion, if you want to continue to add to this thread feel free.
However I have gotten enough feedback to feel assured that our limits are adequate and honest.
That ladies and gents was all I asked the question for.

'Good luck' to all you hosts out there and 'stay wise' all you prospective clients.

As a footnote of advice:

Hosts - keep it real, keep it honest and play morally sound. Ensure your clients have a great customer service and make every client count. Remember that building a hosting community is far better than growing a bunch of disgruntled customers. Above all remember that your clients are wanting their websites up and running 24/7 - This is the most important thing about hosting!

Clients - Whether prosepective or well seasoned, continue to research the product and host you have. Instead of moving around for better deals all the time, try to change your host for the better, give some feedback and make some changes. Its only through client pressure that ridiculous and unfounded hosts will fail. Get the product you pay for and deserve!

Thanks for all your comments folks!!

Matt

Unlimited is just story and cannot be unlimited, may be they allow you to use but just use it they will not allow you and will try to ban from using.

A big server may have 1 TB disk thats the limit to which it works no hosting company will use blades or storage class for sharedhosting so this unlimited space is virtual concept

You say unlimited is impossible but you sell it on your site?

Hmmm

His site also appears to be down right now as well, so I have no clue what's going on with that host.

Anyway, unlimited can't be done for the simple fact that it's a physical thing, which may have already been mentioned. Either way though, it's true.

Really new host sell that. Its more like a catch they only really do it so that then they can get the customer they will put like unlimited everything for 7.95 or 6.95 but they can over sell and they do that because they know that's there first customer and they aren't going to over sell and if they see they are llow on somthing they will jiust upgrade or tell the customer that that plan is not avalable and thwy have to upgrade or downgrade but they will get 1 month free lol it happen to me.

This is for resellers*

If you think logically you can understand just go to the dedi server sales zone in this forum and see what is the maximum disk capacity a company sells, hardly may be 1 TB at maximum that also for astronomical price.

The disk usage by a client will not exceed 1-5% of his alloted usage in 90% of the cases in my experience of about 3 years, this is the bottom line of the promotion Unlimited hosting.

Some forums even banned the promotion of unlimited hosting offers
