Is Unlimited REALLY Unlimited?

Nice! I like your stance! Can't believe this has generated so much interest? I only started the thread as I was annoyed myself! Lol

If you started this thread, then all the 14 pages of this discussion is your fault. :P

One thing is a given when it comes to discussing "unlimited" web hosting. Either they love it or they hate it.

Personally, I am to the point where I never want to hear the term "unlimited web hosting" ever again.

Good to you mfwl for hitting on a hot thread topic.

I don't think BlueHost and HostGator are the same right? They're different from each other and have their own unique plans.

And they both are promoting unlimited bandwidth and web hosting storage. Unlimited bandwidth and disk space cannot be obtained. Therefore they are promoting a lie.

BlueHost and HostMonster and one and the same - HostGator is different.

The point being made was the unlimited hosting was not possible to attain.

Many companies provides the Unlimited Space and
Unlimited Bandwidth Transfer with their highest plan only.

So those companies are only lying if you choose to get their highest plan I guess?
Irrelevant. If they offer unlimited on any plan they are lying to clients.

Id Agree, most provider’s wont segment plans or users of those plans to the same server; however in the rare chance they do the performance degradation will be the same across their network. As such those in the same rack or the same networked racks will experience the loss in performance.

More importantly this creates a bottleneck on the main network switches and hubs as they alone allow access from the outside world and again they alone have individual limits. As a user of data centres rather than an owner id select those that don’t allow unlimited transit over those that do for this very reason.

It was for that reason we changed data centre to our current provider upon registering as a new company after our merger. Which is why regardless of if it is the highest plan or not, the bottleneck effect still exists as there are physical limitations to which all of the provider’s servers are accountable to.

And the counter argument of multiple data centres is valid however the spread of data centres required discounting the other hosts with similar usages or packages within them that would be required to satisfy the physical limitations for hostgator or another here mentioned aren’t high enough in number and low enough in cost for them to ever consider.

Which leads to the underlying “Unlimited Is a Lie and Is Unethical

- side note - Think it might be time to lay this demon to rest before blue blows a gasket :P:devil:

Most of the hosting companies who claim unlimited space etc actually know well that hardly any site would require extra space than alloted. 99% of the sites they host don't actually occupy all the resources of the host. Hence the clever way of advertising!

When you claim unlimited ANYTHING, it is an outright lie and false advertising. Any time you ever see a host offering any of this crap, I take it as a sign to avoid them like the plague. But still, many companies continue to make these bogus claims. How come nobody has attempted to sue any of them for false advertising by now? Surely it has to be long overdue.

The term "Unlimited" is only marketing niche to attract more customer. Customer are often attract to such keyword "Unlimited" or "Free".
