I've been playing around with HeyBubble. not a bad platform.

How customizable / developer friendly is it? I've seen them before but felt their control panel was far to bulky.

I dont know about your budget, but Kayako is a good one, a lot of features, you could take a look at it

Livezilla is good but as said its too expensive, zendesk is pretty decent but has a few issues, http://www.boldchat.com/ i haven't seen these much but seem like a reliable company for what your needing.

Where do you see $49/m? I see it starts at $60 for 4 ops ($15/op) then $25 per additional op.

That's pretty expensive compared to alternative solutions...

Kayako is really popular with hosting providers though its not free. I have not personally used it bu from a backend perspective but has used its frontend.

[KurotaTakumi]

I recommend zopim. I have used their service for many years. Very cheap and quality.

If you are using WHMCS then http://www.stardevelop.com is better..

[RH-Calvin]

LiveZilla has always been the best live chat software for many web hosting companies. And I too prefer it.

...but you can't customize it at all...! That's why we quit using it. PHPLive and Livezilla are much better products.
