No, unlimited is not really unlimited. Unlimited space/bandwidth is not possible in todays world.

At first I was interested in a few hosts because they offered this, and then I noticed I hardly use ANY of the space needed. The only thing I was looking for now was unlimited add-on domains.

No, unlimited is not really unlimited. Unlimited space/bandwidth is not possible in todays world.

When you really think about it, unlimited will never be truly possible. Even years from now if they were to deploy servers with yottabyte drives, you still can't technically say "unlimited"..

Unlimited Storage and Traffic is a marketing concept hosting providers use. The fastest growing hosts all use this concept.

Unlimited Storage and Traffic does not mean unlimited CPU and memory usage. If a site started to use anything close to "unlimited storage" they'd obviously be using more than 10% of server resources which many of the large hosts have as a cpu and memory limit.

Sites will never use unlimited space cause the cpu and memory usage would limit that.

It's like selling a car that can go 200mph but you can't go that fast since the law restricts it. There are always other factors that can limit usage.

The unlimited hosts do not limit storage and traffic, but they do limit cpu and memory usage. They also limit the types of sites you can host like you can't use it for remote backups or host video sites.

"Unlimited" doesn't mean "no restrictions"

I understand everyone's point here, but unlimited storage and traffic is not going anywhere anytime soon. I too used to let it upset me but I see both sides of the issue now. Most of the top 20 hosting companies are unlimited now. If it was such a lie don't you think they would have been brought up on fraud charges by now?

BlueHost, HostGator, the list goes on an on of unlimited hosts... and most are the fastest growing hosts in the industry. Can that be so wrong?

the thing is hosts like hostgator make that much money as it is they can proberbly allow each customer to use a decent amount of space

for an example if they allow a customer 20gb hdd but they just use 12 and the next customer does the same, do you think they will waste what isnt being used? or do you think they will let somebody else use it?,

anyway big companys like that make the money to buy big servers to offer things like that, and they dont mean its unlimited, they just mean that, the space and hdd is there if you need it.

A relative term

Mostly I think "unlimited" means that it's not humanly possible to surpass the limits set by the provider. But, I haven't tried, though.

True, there is no such thing as unlimited hosting. Companies just bank on the fact that hardly any one will reach the quotas they give, so they advertise it as 'unlimited'. Companies can explain it in such a way that they give 'unlimited' possibilities if they allow upgrades.

Hello,

Unlimited is really not unlimited. I think web hosting companies tell you this as a way to sucker you into thinking they are the best because they can offer unlimited. Everything has a limit - your diskspace and bandwidth. If you have a 500GB harddrive saying it is unlimited is completely wrong. It will only hold up to 500GB worth of data.

Totally agree with it. Why they saying so but actually couldn't provide unlimited resources.

Unlimited as we look for but sometimes not.Defining it can be in certain or specific parts. It is sometimes a way to attract more customers.

This thread has a life of its own - why? Because so many entrepreneurs new to hosting expect their sites to grow and perceive unlimited as a safe bet. How many of them do you think really read TOS or AUP policies?

Education is the key - getting the word out that this is a marketing strategy. If you're on a shared hosting account, that provider offering unlimited bandwidth is rationalizing that you won't use excessive resources, and most don't. Those in the industry who really need lots of bandwidth or space probably aren't looking at shared hosting anyway.

I prefer to manage our prospects expectations. Just be upfront in terms they can relate to and understand. While you always have to at least be competitive on price, most prospects realize they get what they pay for. Marketing strategies get prospects in the door. Honesty and integrity keeps them onboard - as long as you deliver.

This really has to stop. We really need to educate the public about "UNLIMITED" deals.

There is NO such thing as unlimited anything. There is always be a limit.

Just like the PC or laptop you own, the servers that host your web files are limited. They have a limit on storage, memory and processing power. So do the bandwidth that every hosting company owns.

Even God put a limit to our lives. So, How do you expect anything to be unlimited?

Unlimited as we look for but sometimes not.Defining it can be in certain or specific parts. It is sometimes a way to attract more customers.

Right, most companies use unlimited resources for attracting more and more customers, though for most of them this is not the most important thing.

Wow this is a big thread, I actually wrote a blog post about this today in my new blog, which I btw have not even linked from my site yet :)

<<URL snipped>>

When using unlimited, you don't need to care about anything. You just using your hosting, developing your project and concentrating to your idea.
And If some day (nobody knows when) your website will start using many resources and if your hosting resources are very low (in my opinion it is unfear to offer unlimited if you resources are low..) you can contact your hosting provider to find solution, but not to be suspended or deleted...

In few words - unlimited is unlimited and what unlimited it will be belongs from hosting provider :)
So saying that unlimited is bad when you have experience with 3 or 4 hosting providers isn't very good :)

Any more comments?

Yes, only that you should read the rest of the thread if possible before deciding that unlimited really is unlimited, and before thinking that hosts will be kind enough to contact you before shutting down your site.

It happens all the time-a site gets popular and boom, they are gone. Sometimes the hosts claim breach of TOS and won't let you access the files even. 'Unlimited' is bad news.

Unlimited is NEVER unlimited. How do you imagine a server with an unlimited hard drive and an unlimited network card? If such thing existed then the whole YouTube would be hosted on a single "unlimited" shared hosting account. LOL.
