Is Unlimited REALLY Unlimited?

This is the big debate and something that really grates with me!

Unlimited disk space: There is no such thing, a host offering unlimited disk space surely has to be prepared to make a loss by supplying over and above the necessity... It seems to me that if you give unlimited space to your resellers then they will store rubbish and crap that they would otherwise delete. There will be multiple installations of scripts and backups upon backups..

Unlimited bandwidth: This is a little more feasible although again sometimes it is misunderstood. Unlimited is only as unlimited as the connection and CPU allow. Sure you could get an unlimited bandwidth account and use it to its full potential, however if the server has 100Mbps connection and you use that 24/7 then there will be a cap on the amount of bandwidth you can achieve. If you do the maths its a hell of a lot, however its not unlimited.

Over all I think that as long as you use your common sense when purchasing a reseller account you cant go far wrong. There ISN'T anything such as unlimited disk space - you will most probably get suspended or terminated before you cost the host much more money in the provision of extra hardrives. Unlimited bandwidth does have an upper limit although if allowed through the term 'unlimited' you can be sure its extremely high and 99% unattainable!

The annoying thing I find is that there are so many offers of unlimited space and bandwidth about at just pence! The frenzy to purchase these accounts is only followed months after with angry and disappointing forum discussions.

In my opinion, however valid, you should stay away from these quick buck hosts and plump for an account with realistic resource provision ensuring that customer service is your top priority. Remember if the server goes down, you are helpless unless there is someone you can tell!

And to all the 'quick buck promise the world for nothing hosts' - what goes around comes around!

Unless the company own their own personal internet service provider (ISP) and their own data center then there is no way the can truly be unlimited.
 
Unlimited hosting(Storage/Bandwidth) is really just a marketing trick played by hosting companies.
Unlimited hosting means there is no limit.this is not possible as there is no such server that has unlimited powers.
There is always a Limit.:crash:
 
Unlimited bandwidth and space offers quickly change when a site is using an unusual amount of resources. Offers like this are made by those who really don't have a clue on how fast a person can burn through resources if they want to.

I don't think that a Yahoo manager has no clue. (The one that didn't just got fired. :P)

These accounts are not really about unlimited usage. They're about indirectly limited usage. 20TB in a $10 shared hosting package isn't any more real than "unlimited" is. Fact is, these hosts (or at least some of them) are at a level where a particular customer's usage isn't representative. They have a pretty accurate average usage per customer that won't deviate/increase much. There have been customers pushing 5TB+ off of such accounts, without issues (basically achievable only if you're offering big files for download). The line in the sand that they draw is CPU/memory/I/O usage based. Once your usage stops them from maintaining the number of accounts per server that they've deemed necessary for them to be profitable, you're stopped in your tracks. That's the whole philosophy.

Nice Philosophy and I guess I agree. As for the pervious question of 'Can you get unlimited harddrives?' Dont be so ridiculous lol

Not in the true sense of 'unlimited'. There are setups where you can keep adding hard drives to keep increasing the space available, but they cost money and for these accounts that are offered for 5 bucks a month, the host isn't going to keep shelling out $100's of dollars to give 'unlimited' space.
 
Anyway, there is always a limit and if a customer overuses the server resources(though he/she has unlimited resources), his/her account will be automatically suspended for the server overload.So, it is a type of a marketing strategy:D
 
I don't see why this is such a hard concept to grasp.

Unlimited is a lie. PERIOD.

There is no such thing. It is a physical impossibility.

Any host who offers it is lying to you so you are getting in to business with a liar. Not a great way to start a business relationship in my opinion.

Unlimited is really not unlimited. I think web hosting companies tell you this as a way to sucker you into thinking they are the best because they can offer unlimited. Everything has a limit - your diskspace and bandwidth. If you have a 500GB harddrive saying it is unlimited is completely wrong. It will only hold up to 500GB worth of data.
 
No such thing as unlimited. Hosting companies use this to get more customers...When you go over your limit, they suspend you, or delete you off the server.

Totally agree with this, however; the only thing I would argue about as a 'devils advocate', is the reality of 'unlimited bandwidth' and the said advertising of unlimited bandwidth.
In advertising this service the host could be excused in the fact that the host does NOT apply a limit therefore they could say it was 'unlimited (by them)'.

The fact remains that the bandwidth is naturally limited by the connection speed eg:

100Mbps dedicated connection
(100mbps x 60secs x 60mins x 24hrs x 30days = 259,200,000Mb)

1Gbps dedicated connection
(1Gbps x 60secs x 60mins x 24hrs x 30days = 2,592,000Gb)

Correct me if I am wrong! - PS this is shared throughout all users on the server! Even so it is so high it could be considered unlimited as it would take a miracle to reach it!
Plus technology even with fibre optics to your desktop pc would still not achieve this level or data transmission.

At first I was interested in a few hosts because they offered this, and then I noticed I hardly use ANY of the space needed. The only thing I was looking for now was unlimited add-on domains.
 
Unlimited Storage and Traffic is a marketing concept hosting providers use. The fastest growing hosts all use this concept.

Unlimited Storage and Traffic does not mean unlimited CPU and memory usage. If a site started to use anything close to "unlimited storage" they'd obviously be using more than 10% of server resources which many of the large hosts have as a cpu and memory limit.

Sites will never use unlimited space cause the cpu and memory usage would limit that.

It's like selling a car that can go 200mph but you can't go that fast since the law restricts it. There are always other factors that can limit usage.

The unlimited hosts do not limit storage and traffic, but they do limit cpu and memory usage. They also limit the types of sites you can host like you can't use it for remote backups or host video sites.

"Unlimited" doesn't mean "no restrictions"

I understand everyone's point here, but unlimited storage and traffic is not going anywhere anytime soon. I too used to let it upset me but I see both sides of the issue now. Most of the top 20 hosting companies are unlimited now. If it was such a lie don't you think they would have been brought up on fraud charges by now?

BlueHost, HostGator, the list goes on an on of unlimited hosts... and most are the fastest growing hosts in the industry. Can that be so wrong?

Unlimited is not really unlimited.. There is no server is the world that has unlimited space.. Unlimited hosting does give you A LOT of bandwidth and disk space (most likely more than you will ever need) therefore, I really wouldnt worry about it.
