How do they do it? Unlimited domains and bandwidth

Hi,

You have not mentioned from where you have heard such details. Information from the relevant sources can only be trusted otherwise not.

In this modern era, complexities are getting simpler day by day due to heavy influx of technologies. Please do not believe those unless you make sure that they are the relevant.

However, the details mentioned in your ticket make sense to me also but I recommend you to explore the same more on search engines available on the web.
Please expand a little on your thoughts :D

Unlimited space, bandwidth, and domains is just a marketing ploy. Obviously you can't have unlimited anything. There plan is that 99% of their customers won't use hardly any resources. I know that my site is hosted on a server with thousands of other sites on it.

Since there is a lot of leverage with the cost of getting good hosting hardware and the services you can actually give, lots of web hosts say unlimited to entice you into paying them for this hosting.

To be honest you better off getting your own hosting software and supping your own site with services. This makes it easy to make sure your site up-time and user experience is not hindered.

Hi,

Lots of companies are offering "unlimited domains, disk space, and bandwidth" to their customers. How can they do this? Even with VPS and cloud servers, it seems like this is not a sustainable business model.

I have heard that some companies have a maximum file amount in their SLA and use a script to monitor how many files are on an account. And they use this to limit the size of client account. However, what if a client starts saving 5 GB daily backups on their account? In 60 days they would be taking up 300 GB of disk space!

I have also heard that some hosting companies have a CPU monitor that monitors each clients CPU useage, and that in their SLA they have a "max CPU load" restriction. Is this true? If so can this be done with Linux servers running on a VPS or cloud?

It is possible to offer unlimited domains however unlimited bandwidth does not look realistic. The web hosting company that offers unlimited bandwidth maybe overselling the service. A genuine web host might never offer unlimited bandwidth.

If this news is true then I think this must be a good offer an unlimited domains, disk space and bandwidth you can maximize more the usage of your domains.

How does that make it any less of a lie?
If there are restrictions then it is not unlimited.
Unlimited does not exist. Period.

Yes i do agree with you, i was not stating that it made it possible to offer them. I was just stating that when a web host offers "unlimited or unmetered" that they usually justify this with a "fair usage policy". Stating that clients can not use "such and such amount of processing power, web space and transfer".

10Mps works out at about 3TB of bandwidth per month. So, sure, you can have unlimited bandwidth, and here's your 10Mbps ports to go with..

By the way, i have heard that those South Asian VOIP guys who actually can use 50TB/month on a single server will not be given an account, and if they are, there is always the small-print.

Beware the Ts&Cs and SLA details my padwan..

thats what i was hinting towards in my previous post pete, there is always a catch. Although everyone has different outlooks on the subject i guess.

Unmetered...

My company offers unmetered bandwidth, we stand by this too. This is NOT unlimited though, the bandwidth needs to be legitimate band width for their business.
It generally works for us as we have our own data center, but if we were restricted by our upline, we would need to pass this on too.
Most of the sites I see offering unlimited are themselves, small resellers....with very limited resources.

Simply the are fraud. No company in the earth can give unlimited web hosting and bandwidth..
Sometime i became shocked about hostgator.. hostgator is a big company but they also telling lie.. WTF....
Anyways i love my company.. they never lie.. dreamyhost.com

Well the whole setup for unlimited space and bandwith works really simple. A company with a large cluster setup can really have lots of extra space set up in sans with raid 10+1 with multiple servers. Plus with the fact that really most sites don't use all there bandwidth you can oversell the bandwidth really easy and not be in to much issue.

Really is it right? No but here is a though, people say there is no such thing as unlimited space well you can keep adding harddrives so they can offer unlimited space but they place limits as to the type of files and the amount of memory and cpu you can use so not everything is unlimited just the space and the bandwidth.

It is marketing and it really is perception. It should really be called unmetered bandwidth and space.

Theoretically speaking, you can keep on expanding it forever, but can you afford to do it by selling $1-5/month unlimited plans? Doubt it. And the moment your first 10 customers going to be using TB of data, the whole operation will go awry.

So running a webhost i see that with 10 customers i use less than 3 gb space. Most of the unlimited providers have terms of service that don't allow you to use it for file storage. This creates the appearence of unlimited space but you would never really reach close to more than a couple hundred gb maybe.

So a unlimited host sells shared plans for 1.00 a month
and has 3000 customers.

$3000 dollars

Probably needs around 5 servers and lets figure he owns
5 dual quad core servers. And his colo costs including bandwidth is 500 dollars a month. this is more than feasible.

2500 a month in profit.

Artashes, could you share your view of Hostgator's unlimited plan, I mean how they've managed grow their operations offering these plans, while branding themselves as a reliable provider?
