Cloudways steps out of WordPress’s shadow with a bet on Node.js

Cloudways just launched Velocity, a managed Node.js hosting service, and it’s answering a problem that’s gotten worse specifically because of how good AI coding tools have become. Developers can now generate a working application prototype in minutes. Getting that same application running reliably in production, patched, backed up, secured, still takes real infrastructure work that AI hasn’t touched. Velocity is Cloudways betting that gap is where the next wave of hosting demand actually lives.

The service sits deliberately between two extremes developers already know well. Serverless platforms abstract away nearly everything, which is convenient until you need more control than they allow. Self-managed VPS environments hand over full control, along with every maintenance headache that comes with it. Velocity splits the difference: developers deploy through Git and keep visibility into their applications and deployment history, while Cloudways quietly handles server maintenance, patching, SSL certificates and backups behind the scenes.

It supports server-side and client-side rendered applications, Express-based API backends, and Next.js apps specifically, with persistent server resources built to handle long-running APIs rather than just quick prototypes that spin up and disappear. Cloudflare Enterprise capabilities come bundled in too, along with a web application firewall, DDoS protection and malware scanning, security work most small teams would rather not own themselves.

This also marks a real shift for Cloudways, which built its reputation almost entirely on managed WordPress hosting. Agencies already running WordPress sites on the platform can now host headless applications, JavaScript frontends and standalone Node.js services inside that same environment, without juggling a separate hosting provider for anything that isn’t a traditional CMS.

UK ecommerce agency Regal IT already put the platform to use, deploying its RMA Pro Shopify application on Velocity after previously managing several infrastructure pieces separately by hand. The agency now plans to move additional Shopify apps and other software products onto the same setup.

The bigger pattern here extends past Cloudways specifically. As AI tools keep shrinking the time it takes to write code, the actual competition among hosting platforms is shifting toward who can remove the most operational burden from deployment without stripping developers of the control they still genuinely need.
