Cloudflare built a browser for AI agents, not people, in 12 weeks

Cloudflare just launched a web browser with no tabs, no bookmarks bar, and honestly no real interest in whether a human ever looks at it. Kitesurf serves AI agents exclusively, and the design choices reflect that from the ground up.

Traditional browsers spend a lot of engineering effort on things people actually see: tabs, themes, rendering that looks good on a screen. Kitesurf skips most of that and instead manages context windows, controls token costs, and defends against threats that only make sense in an AI context, like prompt injection attacks that hide inside a webpage to hijack an agent’s instructions.

The pitch for developers is straightforward. Instead of building browser infrastructure from scratch just so an AI agent can navigate a website, fill out a form, or extract information, Kitesurf handles that layer directly. It runs entirely on Workers, Cloudflare’s serverless platform, and the company says it built the whole thing in just 12 weeks, a genuinely fast timeline for something this technically involved.

Right now, developers can use Kitesurf for free during its beta phase, through Cloudflare’s Browser Run service, which lets them control headless browser instances programmatically across Cloudflare’s network. Cloudflare claims Kitesurf uses noticeably less CPU and memory than Chromium for typical agentic tasks like taking screenshots or extracting HTML, which translates directly into lower compute costs for anyone running these agents at scale.

Under the hood, the browser combines a few different open source pieces: a modular rendering engine from Blitz, Firefox’s Stylo CSS parser, and Boa, a Rust-based JavaScript engine, all running inside Cloudflare Workers. Cloudflare says Kitesurf already passes more than 215,000 web platform tests, and the company credited the open source Obscura project as an early influence on how it approached the build.

Whether Kitesurf sticks as real infrastructure or ends up as a curiosity probably comes down to how many developers actually run AI agents at a scale where browser costs and prompt injection risks matter enough to make them switch away from whatever they’re using now.
