Would you choose cheap hosting company or are you willing to pay more ?

A host I came across a few years ago was offering unlimited hosting for 30 cents/per month.

This still happens. Look at the prices of some reseller/master reseller listings on ebay.

People will get a cheap $2 a year reseller hosting plan and then call themselves a web host as they are now offering unlimited plans for peanuts and when anything goes wring they have no idea on how to fix this, so just packup and leave.
i sometimes like testing some of these so called ebay hosts with simple questions and i actually come across 1 a few months back that had no idea what DNS was or what a dedicated IP was.

:D People think. Hey I'll throw up a website and some software, become a web host and make millions overnight.

I hear of this a lot on forums, people asking for help on these things when they're already running a web hosting business, they ask how do I restart my server etc. All the stuff a web host should already know.

If you don't know about these things and still want to start a web hosting company, at least hire someone that does know what they're doing to run the servers.

I didn't just jump into the hosting business overnight, I started learning web servers and the commands etc when I was 13 (I'm now 25) so I prepared myself before jumping in.

I had dreams of starting my own web hosting business at 13, but I did the sensible thing and waited as I wasn't really prepared and I'm sure things would've been disastrous if I had started the business at 13.

Also reminds me of a host I used 5 years ago. The host had just started and I decided to give them a chance. I signed up, everything went fine for a few months.

Then all of sudden I couldn't access my site. I let host know after 3 hours of waiting for the service to come back.

The guy there responded saying he couldn't figure out why the websites couldn't be accessed because the server was online.

I responded saying maybe the http Daemon needs started.

He responded back 20 minutes later saying that he didn't know how. "Face palm" Though I do give him credit for being honest. lol

I gave him the instructions on how to do it and my site was back online 10 minutes later.

I think a lot of people initially start out solely focused on price. Once they start using it for a specific purpose or task, other variables come into play.

We've been trying to balance this and not sure if we've hit that happy medium.

It depends on how cheap. If they are offering unlimited space and bandwidth I stay way.
Any other host I will look at as long as they are not charging more then 25 for shared.

Same here, unlimited disk space is a joke, and would never go down that route. I like to know exactly what Im paying for.
When I used to buy shared hosting, I always went with the cheapest provider I could find. Most of the stuff I was hosting was for testing purposes anyway, and really uptime was not an issue.

Why is it a joke? There are several provides which are known to provide quality unlimited hosting, the same as you would get with normal hosting.

Are you saying that because you offer unlimited?
I took one look at your site and closed it after I saw unlimited.
I have had far to many issues with the hosts that I have tried that had unlimited that I would never go with one again. No matter how good they say they are.
Most of them limit something else like inodes, which is not unlimited. Some of them have such a low number that I would not be able to host with them any way. I have well over 100,000 inodes.

You can say the same about companies that equally do not offer unlimited space/bandwidth plans. I've had my share of experience with all kinds of them. Unlimited plans have become so common nowadays (not that I think it is okay or not), that it all comes down to (a) the way the company managed their "unlimited" infrastructure and (b) common sense of buyers. If your website is busy and heavy, you should probably have enough knowledge to assume a shared hosting environment won't be the proper kind of solution for you.

However, in the defense of clients, unfortunately most do not possess that kind of knowledge because the common spread of unlimited offers persuade customers in the opposite - is that an unlimited plan suits all.

price is also a factor these days.

3 YEARS UNLIMITED INTERNET WEB HOSTING WORDPRESS ECOMMERCE JOOMLA OPENCART ÂŁ4.99

UNLIMITED Cpanel hosting ÂŁ1.50 per year

just 2 i found on ebay

compared to a limited plan for ÂŁ5 + a month

so where are people going to go

We are working with the assumption that dominant majority of people find web hosting services by searching the web, not on Ebay. Price is a factor, but not as important when talking about the Unlimited goodness that in most cases costs less than $10/month. No difference betweem a $4, $5 or $7/month plan, when everything has no limit, it'll come down to who has a better looking website (by "better", I mean more trustworthy).

My site really is not that busy but it does take up almost 20gb of space. Mainly because of the over 13,000 games I have in the arcade. I wish it was back up to needing vps or semi dedicated but it does not require that any more. How ever I still require a lot of space. No unlimited as of yet meets my needs for space because of the inode limit.

I would always take the balance of price and quality of service. Price does not always define everything for me. Sometimes there are cheap services that we thought would never be as good as those expensive ones but when we try it , it actually gives best results. So for me I always consider that quality and price equally. :)

If you will look for a cheap hosting remember that it will not be stable for longer. You can also find cheap downtimes and cheap customer support in exchange.

For a cheap provider , its not possible to cover up server cost, a normal server cost $100/mo which can host a good number of clients but if they start selling for $ 5/yr then how can they cover up their cost?? they will oversell their service and hence you may face issues like over loads and they may even close up their service anytime without notice.

you can get a decent sized VPS from $30 a month and offer a stable service, so selling $5 plans then sell 6 and you have your server covered.

even if your full costs are $100 then at $5 plans you can still offer a stable service as 20 sales and you have covered yourself. and 20 accounts on a server is way from overselling the server.

price doesnt matter always.the thing that matter is the quality assurance.if someone is paying a good price then its natural that he must be expecting a good service also.

Hi Guys,

Would you choose cheap hosting company or are you willing to pay more for web hosting.

Do you think that hosting prices are a sign of trust ? :rolleyes2

The best way is to research about the hosting first, and just out the reviews from google. if they are offering good support and reliability in cheap hosting then go for it, otherwise don't.

Of course you must see when its so low (even with good reviews etc...) then it may be a to good to be true offer ;).

$12 per year, unlimited space bandwidth, free domain name but the company has several good reviews recently. I still wouldn't consider touching that company ;).

I think he talked about reviews in long term. No one looks for just recent reviews if you ask me. You'd always want to look at the bigger picture and see how they have fared since the last couple of years at least.

That's why not many people actually go for new webhosts, no matter how cheap or expensive their plans are.

Even with that $12 unlimited plan, the webhost would get a profit of $2-3 at least. So he won't mind selling that plan to at least 20 such clients every month if he is on a VPS.

That $2 - $3 is over a 1 year period. So to actually profit (Server costs, employees or for your own living, licensing costs etc...) you'd need to seriously overload the box.

Well I am pretty sure a person selling web hosting services for his living won't sell a $12/year plan. :D

But generally 20 websites on a VPS won't really blow it off.

I think a new, small webhost would start with such kind of plans. But eventually they will all raise their prices substantially for growth in longer term.
