Windows or Linux

Now with Microsoft "open sourcing" .NET I wonder whether that will change the choice in a year or two's time?

The choice you have when purchasing a 1&1 shared hosting package is whether to opt for Linux or Windows technology. Both formats will work on any PC and are capable of powering impressive websites.

The operating system that you use on your computer should not govern your choice, all 1&1 packages come with FTP access and a range of web page publishing options so, if your computer runs on Microsoft ® Windows ® for instance, it doesn’t mean you have to opt for Microsoft web hosting… Linux hosting works just as well as Windows hosting. For information : http://www.1and1.com/details-linux-windows

Consider the tools and scripting language you plan to use – if you use PHP, MySQL or Perl together with a variety of software programs, Linux is the one for you. If the applications you plan to use are Windows-Specific, then Windows hosting is likely to be the right choice

Website hosting is more accessible than ever before in the history of the internet. There's no need to be a programming genius or a code expert. As a matter of fact, you don't need to know any of that. With the customer support capabilities and instant information access, anyone can get a website started.

There are lots of differences between Linux and Windows. It's like the differences between truck and car.

Linux - Runs using OpenSource, Means more stable and secure

Windows - Runs on the propitiatory source code.

Linux - FREE, don't need to pay for it.

Windows - You need to pay the license FEE

Linux - World’s most popular OS, Used by 80% of the servers

Windows - Least popular in Web Hosting Industry

Linux - Generally Good for Opensource platforms like WordPress, Joomla, PHP, MySql

Windows - Generally good for MSSQL, ASP. NET

Linux - Get lots of FREE & Quality software like, MySql, MongoDB, Ngnix, Apache, Email Servers, the list is truly endless

Windows - You need to pay for Everything

Linux - Both are stable equally

Windows - Both are stable equally

Linux - Cost, Cheap / Low Cost

Windows - Expensive

Linux - Good for system Admins, You can enjoy with shell script, Easy to manage

Windows - Good for Admins who are comfortable with UI

Linux - Support When Critical, You can google it and find some solution to solve the problem quickly, As more people are using

Windows - You have to wait for Microsoft to help you, but difficult to reach them.

I would personally stay with Linux not only for the cost savings but dealing with Microsoft licensing can be a pain.

You also generally will have less overall issues with a properly setup Linux server compared to a Windows server, at least in my own experience.

It is not easy to decide which hosting is better for you Linux or Windows. Here is a list of pros and cons of both Windows and Linux OS which helps you in choosing the best one according to your requirement.

It will depends on your requirements, If you have developed site on asp.net you should use windows to host bcoz as linux will supports php, perl, python etc scripting languages and also it supports MySQL, MariaDB. You have to use the OS's as per your requirements

In simple language we can describe Linux and windows will be as follow:

Windows: GUI interface and easy to use.
Linux: Secure one

Both have their unique features and also it depends your project or business. As windows supports only .net applications.

The flexibility of multiple distros, the non-existent asking price and the heightened security, Linux is my overall favourite - assuming you’ve got the patience to adapt to a new system.

Window Or Linux

Both Linux and Windows are reliable operating systems that have some different capabilities and some different advantages.

1. If you are looking to create complex concept frameworks, and use Windows Script languages for your website, then Windows hosting is best for you.

2. However, if you are planning to create an E-commerce website with shopping cart or blog sites, then Linux hosting will be the best option for you.

This is my personal view, but I like Linux more than Windows. Windows seems to have issues in general.

Linux is user-friendly, many people use WordPress and popular CMS platforms which work best on Linux. Things are easier to fix as well on the server than on Windows.

You can use WordPress, Joomla, etc. on Windows, but you'd get the best performance on Linux.

Key Differences Between Linux and Windows Operating System. Linux is free and open source operating system whereas Windows is a commercial operating system whose source code is inaccessible. ... Linux provides high security than windows because Linux is open source. Windows must boot from the primary partition.

Linux and Windows are different operating systems. If we were to compare these 2, we can use 9 aspects of comparison.

1. Performance
Linux is more resource efficient than Windows.

2. Security
Linux is safer than Windows.

3. Compatibility
Depending on the language the software uses, you should choose Windows or Linux based on the application requirements.

4. Server Access
Linux gives more accessibility compared to Windows. Although you can do a few tricks to get around Windows accessibility.

5. Control Panel
Linux: cPanel
Windows: Plesk

6. Support
Windows has a better team of support.

7. Ease of Use
Windows are more familiar to the general consumers.

8. Scalability
Both can be scaled up. However, only Linux OpenVZ VPS can be downgraded, when required.

Windows is slightly more expensive due to licensing fee.

If you want to know further into each aspects of comparison, read our <URL snipped>.

If you would be using asp or .net then you should go with windows, but if you are not, then definitely stick with Linux because of the security and the stability.
