What if the FBI seizes your servers?

That's stupid that they seized all the equipment when it would have been quite easy to determine what specific server(s) were actually in violation of federal law.

The more I read of this, the more I'm convinced that the FBI went too far. At this point, there's little doubt in my mind that criminal fraud did occur, but seizing colocated servers not owned by Core IP Networks or associated with their scam - at the expense of innocent clients seems unwarranted.

Id have to agree, and im getting the same impression after reading a lot of the content that has been linked, seems almost childish that they are taking all of the equiptment which will only result and has resulted in larger disruption and more work for the FBI, as well as resulting in them having to deffend their actions.

Yes it does seem like they did go to far in this situation, there was really no point in taking all the servers.

Its going to be interesting how this all plays out now. I think the FBI made a mistake in taking all the colo servers. I wonder if the some of the companies are going to sue the government because of how bad of a job they did.

I'm sure a few will, and may even get some small settlements, but when it comes down to it many legal organizations still have it that they can do whatever they want.

That's pretty scaring if you ask me but then again our government is crazy in general.
I imagine getting raided is scary. For the accused who brought about this raid, it seems they're burying themselves legally in public forums and blogs. For the innocent who got caught up in all of this - it really presses the importance of having reliable remote backup. I disagree that our government is crazy in general. There are thousands of consciencious citizens serving in Federal and State governments - who care about the issues all of us face.

I think that the FBI did go too far in this situation. Many companies have been damaged immensely due to their actions and they may not have even had any connection to the alleged crimes that took place. If they took my servers, I would be heated and I would be seeking legal representation without a second thought as the government has no right to cripple innocent businesses. Yes, they are the FBI. Yes, they are the government. Yes, they will do what they want. However, there are consequence to our actions, therefore there has to be consequences for their actions. It's not right and they should realize how badly they messed up by crippling these innocent businesses. Just imagine how much revenue you would lose if your servers were seized and you were doing nothing wrong.

Wow - I take off for a few weeks and I miss out on all of this. I didn't even see anything on the news about this - pretty weird.

As far as warrants go - once it is issued, and once they show it to you at the door, there is no stopping. At that point you can review the paper, heck you can start reading the warrent as they're packing everything up in your house ;) Calling a lawyer can and should be done, but it won't stop the initial search and seisure.

Taking all the machines as they did was overboard. As others had stated, I don't know anyone who has a contengency plan for something like this, and it pretty much spells death for a hosting company overnight. While backups may be made of the servers, and even if they're at a different location, the warrent likely would include backup equipment and if not already stated, would reference the backup location by address and that equipment would be seized also.

Pretty amazing stuff. I need to go through the followup articles so I can hear how this plays out!

I haven't kept up with this story. Curious how this all finally went down. Time to start searching Google and Bing. :)

Of course I would try to help in any way possible but when someone comes in and snatches up all your stuff, what else are you going to do but find a nice quiet corner, /facepalm and shed some tears thinking if its even possible to recover from it.

Another reason we do not allow torrents, files not actually linked to your account. This reduces the impact these types of issues "could" have on your server. My question is if the FBI knew about it why didnt the hosting company. That file must have generated some serious traffic, but from what im reading they were co locating. I've dealt with the FBI before there has to be more to the story then this.
