What do you think about how hosting market is going?

I think it is going into the right direction. More and more companies are being established so many would decrese the prices because of the competition also more and more promos and discounts are appearing.
Also the good thing is that more and more companeis are now going green so as to save some electricity and other costs. This means that we are helping our environment.

Generally more competition is a good thing , but with the ridiculously low prices offered by some hosts nowadays, especially in the VPS and reseller segment, unfortunately this also attracts the less serious fly-by-night and kiddie-hosts which seize the opportunity to make some quick cash. This has a negative impact on the hosting industry and its credibility as a whole.

I'll chime in here with a personal view on the matter. VPS and Reseller hosting is oversaturated and is likely not growing as a segment as a whole.

However Cloud, Managed Service, SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS market segments are still growing and will continue to do so for a long time to come. Almost every Fortune 5000 company is already using some sort of hosted services and should continue to expand their outsourcing as new services continue to provide more flexibility and lower costs vs doing things in house.

I think my point here is that I wouldn't expect the old ways of providing hosting (VPS, Dedicated, Domain Reselling) to grow anywhere near as much as the new ways of hosting (SaaS, PaaS, Cloud, etc).

Do not go to the sites that say top 10 hosting or anything of the likes because those are affiliate sites and for them the best host will be the one that pays them the most for passing you on to them.

Shared hosting will definitely be around for a long time, many people are not technically inclined and just want to have a website up and running as quickly and effortless as possible.

Shared hosting is definitely slowing down. What we are seeing more this days is VPS and A bit of Reseller Hosting.

Most people are now considering how fast their servers can get online and in another aspect about its security.

We sell shared plans regularly but this is only due to the fact our cheapest plan costs only $1/mo. Thus said, people spend $22 and get a domain and hosting for a year. This allows them to try their ideas and leaves room for upgrade if need be.

There are companies that still concentrate on shared hosting and they do not seem to be going out of business. Our main source of income are dedicated servers anyways, so we care little about shared hosting.

Reseller Hosting has definitely picked up. More and more people have more than one site nowadays, and understand the benefit of splitting that up into multiple accounts - which is a big contributing factor.

That said, whilst the market is very different from a few years ago - it hasn't changed much lately. Shared plans are still going strong, with an increase in the awareness of different technologies and what they bring.

The more competitors, the better service is IMHO.

Not necessarily. Back in the day, I'd agree. Competition brought in standards which you just expect these days: 24/7 support, contacts via phone and so on.

However, generally quality remains the same as any large provider. You have to consider the number of companies opening up on reseller accounts (especially during the summer), the quality of the network/service is only going to be as good as the upstream provider.

I agree ( the so called Kiddie Hosts), you will see on ebay as the UK summer holidays start more cheap everything for £2 hosting plans appear, but ask these hoist questions before buying they will fail to reply or give wrong answers as they have no clue on hosting, they will also just use paypal order links and have now billing system in place, then after the 6 weeks summer holidays they will just vanish

It is sad, if these operations just continued and was priced properly, they could actually become little earners and possibly go even further (employing people). I can think of a couple companies that went that way but most simply don't get it :(

I saw one on ebay a few weeks back

Unlimited everything reseller account £3 a year. well i like playing with these kiddies and ask them simple hosting questions any host will know.

I asked 1 if they offered Dedicated IPs. I also asked him about DNS and the reply was what is a Dedicated IP and what is DNS.

but i bet these get many signups as people these days what everything for nothing, then come to us or on forums moaning their host has vanished with their site files

In particular VPS and Dedicated are being sold like a charm due to their new cheap prices.

Nowadays a person can afford a dedicated for 5-10$ and VPS for 2$, this market is increasing so much.
