Stuck on what type of control panel

cPanel is good, some of the things they do and the ways they do them are a bit clunky. We've had our issues with them over the years but at the end of the day it's one of the most recognized hosting panels out there.

I've used DirectAdmin and from the end-user side of things it's ok but the admin side is too simplistic for my tastes... Plus the installer is annoying... I like that with cPanel you can just fire the installer and come back in 30~40 minutes and it'll be done.

What type of hosting control panel would be a good one to get?

Plesk and cpanel are both good. Personally I run Plesk on my own servers, but as my company grows I will run cpanel as well as I add servers. I've used both and they are good, it boils down to personal preference.

I would say to visit their sites, you should be able to find demos there that you can try out even though much of the functionality is disabled for obvious reasons. That should give you a chance to see which you like best.

Good luck

I really enjoy Cpanel, i think it is the best one. I have tried numerous others but like all the features Cpanel has. It is also very easy to use and reasonably priced.

cPanel is the standard, most people know about it and there's more tutorials for it.

Mostly because of large companies like HostGator using it. Not that Plesk or DirectAdmin are bad. But cPanel with it's popularity, ease of use and plugins... it's just really great for hosts and for clients. Of course it could be made more lightweight, it's a bit heavy.

Here is what I am wondering. Does the fact that cPanel is more or less considered a standard and the fact that "most people know about it" makes cPanel the actual best?

Most clients (beginners, small businesses, entrepreneurs) and correct me if I am wrong, are novices on the web. Do they really need to have extended features, plug-ins and complicated scripts that would do nothing more than frustrate them? The amount of people I spoke with about their hosting needs care only for domain name and email. As long as they have those functionalities, they are alright. Most don't even care as much for statistics, although a critical component.

That is why I am actually thinking that some custom control panels that make it extra simple for their clients win on both fronts: providing a truly easy and intuitive interface to execute on those few critical tasks and tying them into service long-term.
