[research] Price or Service?

Both. But don't get me wrong service is key when picking a package out. Price is also very important obviously i think taking both things into play is your best bet!

Right now you can find really low price for quality hosting. You really have to check the hardware, network line specs of the hosting company you're considering.

service should be first and formost, if it is cheap but services is no good then what is the point?

this is 100% true as

1) pay $1 and get 99 to 100% uptime and support answered within minutes
2) pay $99 and get 80 to 99% uptime and support answered within 3 days

so which is the better option

People often will say they are looking for a cheap host.
Yet when they get that cheap host then later you will see them complaining about how upset they are at how bad the servers and support are.

On the other hand why pay for services you don't need or care about? Does it really matter if it takes 1 hour or 4 hours to find out why you are unable to upload a picture of your bicycle at 2am? Maybe its better to spend $5/mo instead of $15/mo and forgo the midnight support.

as a 1 man business i provide live support from 7am til 11pm, but if a client comes on for assistance at 10pm i will not stop at 11pm, so if it takes until 2am to sort this issue thyen so be it, but we have a vast KB etc., so clients can usually find answers 24/7. clients are aware of my live hours and you will be surprised how many tickets are sent overnight with simple to answer questions.

What attracts you? What do you focus on when looking for hosting? Do you place a focus on the service(s) and support provided or do you just put a focus on the price and that determines your purchase? This is more then just low price vs high price and assuming you get great service. Service means actually asking the host to ensure that they for example offer say help to manage your website or provide extra support or a service like hand holding. Services can range from security management, to managing content as well and doing personal work for you(we have seen an increase in this area).

I think it really depends on the clients. There are those who are tech savvy and does not need much support, so they will forgo that and opt for the cheaper hosting plans with good server and network specs. Of course there're only few of those kinds of clients...

If your hosting company focuses on support, we can assume that your prices are a bit higher...and your target market would probably be the people who need assistance.

Well, if several reputable hosts offer similar services and all of them cover my needs, then the deciding factor will obviously be the price. Service is very important, but if you could spend less on a good service, then why not...

true, but the main factor would be service

Actually, today due to high competition on the hosting market, to approach a good service quality, many providers are outsourcing their support services (i.e. live chat, phone, ticket support) so it means that day-by-day prices for the quality hosting services are dropping down.
Becoming hard to recognize cheap but great quality service provider sometimes.

I have to be honest and admit that the price factor is the first thing I take into consideration when choosing my host. I don't really need hand holding, and if I needed someone to help me install my websites or teach me the basics of website management, I would hire a freelancer to do it. Therefore, the service offered by the hosting companies comes in second place in the importance hierarchy.

Service always comes first before price. Customers measure satisfaction by the service they get from their providers not from the price.

Main service. Because uptime 99.9% its best reason when you select your hosting. Also support and good hardware.
But not high price also important.

I agree with you. What satisfies clients is the service that a provider gives. You can build a long term relationship with your clients if they are satisfied and they can even bring you more clients because of their referrals that your company provides the best services. Price comes second but is also important as we all look for an affordable and trusted provider. :)

Service. No point paying anything if it doesn't work or function. Having said that, price does have to be reasonable and affordable.

Some of this thread demonstrates a problem with hosting these days: Too many people think providing good customer service is a substitute for technical knowledge. Here is a secret: The more you know about servers, networks, etc, the less service you need to give

Too many people think providing good customer service is a substitute for technical knowledge.

this may be true with this thread but both good customer service and technical knowledge go together.

How can you provide a good customer service if you dont have the technical knowledge of the products/services you are providing?
