Overselling Shared Hosting Plans

Good points and perspectives. We don't oversell at all as we feel that you should get what you pay for. Supporting clients costs money, preparing standard operating procesures costs money, resources costs money.
We would not consider overselling at all because there is something that is not quite honest about it. Morally it doesn't sit right with us, and the fact that by offering a rock solid service we dont have to deal with clients who prefer the all you can eat hosting buffet. Its not in our marketing plan to do so.
However as the saying goes its your business, and it really is to do with as you wish, and to each his or her own. Best of luck to us all though :)

It's a very old thread but I would like comment on it.

IMO if overselling is done wisely and within limitations it might not be considered a bad thing, if you do it carefully based on your experience, make it meaningful with some statistical data then it can be done. :)

I've been using cirrushosting.com for such a long time and I have never had any problems. I know they just moved all of us from their old server to the new one too, just to give us a better service. I can gaurantee u that they do not over sell.

We currently dont oversell, since we cater more to very busy web-sites that use alot of resources.

If it were mom and pop stores where they have like 5 html pages it would be quite easy to oversell, as long as you are able to add capacity very quickly.

As they said with eating, sweets are fine to eat, as long as they are eaten in MODERATION. Overselling is the same way, maybe its not something that hosts should do, but in moderation, I don't think that it is usually the direct cause of problems. I see some hosts that sell shared hosting with like 300 gigs of bandwidth.... I don't know about ya'll, but thats almost 1/3 of an entire server's bandwidth limit. THAT is INSANE; what I would call "abusive overselling"

I dont think overselling should ever ever ever be done, even in moderation I think clients pay for the resources they should recieve all they pay for. I rather be under 200 bucks a month then have 1 bad review about my website, I take good care of my newbs even if they are the biggest newbs in the world :)

i hate newbs but they allways give me money lol. and i really love how they always ask bug you about every single little thing that happens.it just simply amazes me!

P.S. Ryan you make me wet in the pants!:)

Completely agree, If done correctly it can prove to be not just a great method of marketing but fairly profitable too boot.
