How do you think web hosting will be in the 2023? Would we be paying for web space, will GB be like a thing of the past, will laptops and desktops become like typewriters. How do you feel web hosting will present itself in the next generation.

i think by 2023 desktops and laptops will be like most smartphones today and be totally touchscreens and dedicated servers will be more of a price that you get a VPS for now.

Much the same as today, but more hover-boards

But seriously, to look forward 10 years, you have to look back 10 years and see what has changed in that time. As far as technology goes, these days its all about information on the go.

10 years ago, I probably had my trusty Nokia 3210 which although indestructible, just delivered calls and texts (and snake) Today, more people spend time looking at their phones at arms length than they do holding them up to their ears.

Storage will increase and prices will drop. In the last 5 years or so, I would argue that application development is now more streamlined so it will operate on lower hardware. This will most likely push prices down as things get really competitive. There will be multiple copies of data and up-time and availability will be king. I can see multiple copies of hosted data spread across all corners of the globe as high availability becomes paramount.

2023 seems like a long way off now, but 2003 doesn't seem like 10 years ago... My email system still runs on Exchange, I'm writing this post on a Windows laptop, I still have my mobile phone next to me - and still getting no calls!

I'm looking forward to the future, although to us people who are in the hosting world, it seems like nothing new, to a lot of companies out there, the concept of hosting or cloud computing is new and something I expect more and more people to embrace over the next 10 years and beyond

Wear sunscreen though - trust me on that ;)

true i am finding more and more businesses that dont need websites are getting hosting ( plumbers, decorators etc) so that they have simple single page sites so that they have a web presence as more and more people use the web and smartphones to look for businesses. this will increase more and more. even my local corner shop has taken hosting with us and are in the process of setting up an ecommerce site.

Although its difficult to predict you can always expect somethings to get better with time. Like the computing power increases so you can expect high powered cheaper servers and hosting would also get cheaper.

However, things are more likely to become cloud oriented.

Each and every day we see plenty of changes, some for the good and bad. Surely there be a new changes, like some one previously mentioned cloud computing will be the next big thing. Surely we could wait on to be sure about it.

and by that time they may decide what cloud is, as now search google etc. and their is no actual definitive answer to what cloud is

Very true. I'm actually not a massive fan of the word and someone had an argument with me a while back about the definition of the term "cloud computing" Still it's the buzzword used at the moment to define hosted services.

personally to me 'cloud' is just a new marketing gimmick for web hosting that gives those who fall for this the impression they are getting a better/more secure server facility.

Datacenters, dedicated servers, VPS and shared hosting will still be around. I still talk to prospects who don't know how to register a domain name and certainly know nothing about nameservers, DNS, web development and so on. They do know they need a website.

What was that calculation for the speed that technology advances occur? I remember it is not linear so even looking back 10 years doesn't give us a true picture since what was 10 years is now like ancient history- does that make sense...(I hate getting old, I feel like a 486 in the land of I-7's)

Speaking of the brain...wasn't there something about the amount of processing power would outstrip the human by like 2030?

With that being said, yes I have a feeling there will be a need for storage if not actually more, however whether we the small entrepreneur will be able to make a living or will it all be controlled by large corporations remains to be seen.

Interesting discussion...

I'm a massive fan of technology advances, always curious about what the world will be like in 10, 100, 1000 years from now. As far as web hosting is concerned, yeah I don't think the principles behind hosting a website will be much different.

Remember the internet as we know it came about in the 90s although the ability to create a internet based network cme in the 60s. PHP came about in 1995. So in terms of this, the internet hasn't really changed much in the last 20 years. It's just got bigger and faster and more demanding. In 10 years time, I think the differences will be regards to things like online Sat Nav in the car, chip and pin will be contactless everywhere even on busses and taxis. Music will be streamed everywhere (no more physically buying the music).

All this means there will always be a need for webhosting.

we cannot stop evolution of technology. a prime example is the mobile/cell phone. 10/20 years ago all you could do with a mobile phone was make phone calls and send simple SMS text messages, look what you can do now, everything bar go to the bathroom for you.
