FIFA World Cup 2006

Vito, Zidane can live in shame for his remaining days.
That's probably how it wil be. This final gesture of violence will be a mark he will bear for a very long time. Without knowing what the two said to each other, we only have him to blame. We must think though, that should he not have done this today (out of all days), all that history that you mentioned would have been forgotten, and we would all be saying different things about him. It just proves that recent memories weigh more than the old ones. ;)

Beckham got a red card in the match against Argentina in 1998. People have let it go.

Beckham was never a great player.
He always had a great publicist which Zidane doesn't have.

I really think it's a shame. This will be the one event that Zidane will be remembered for. An act of blatent stupidity.
He was a great and talented player who does far more good off the field than on. If he had controlled himself in that one defining moment he would be remembered more fondly.

I think it is unfair. Beckham has been one of the best free kick takers and scorers from a free kick position in the world. That makes him one of the greatests players.
Also, non-great players are not selected to play in world's best clubs.

We're going to have to disagree on this one Art.
As far as I'm concerned Beckham is the most over rated player in the history of the game.
Yes, he is a great free kicker. That's all.
He is completely one dimensional.
He is not a play maker, he can't score, he has no real passing touch, he is not a good team leader, he doesn't play defense. He is a free kicker.
He is not even in the top 50 players to play the game.

I think Beckham presence on the field does make a difference. A lot of times you would see him connecting forwarders and defense players by smartly distributing the ball between them. Also practically all the goals from FK and corners are assisted by him, which makes it another major plus.
Yes, he might not be multi-dimensional, but that does not mean he is a bad player. I think he is also a great team captain. He knows how to inspire, how to create and how to comfort when things go wrong. He does the job just fine.
I have seen him perform closely since 1998 and I noticed that his game gets lifted in critical moments. He is there to mastermind the attack and his foot is there in defense when its most needed. He is noticed, that's for sure. And with his FK taking abilities, he doesn't need to be a player.
