FIFA World Cup 2006

So the World Cup is coming in less than a month, and I cannot wait to wear my English jersey! I am quite a big fan of soccer, and of course England is my favorite team to cheer for. With Rooney being 100% for the cup (hopefully!!), they do have a very strong team, lots of potential.

What's your team? What are your predictions for the quarters, semis, final, winner?

I think England can most definitely make it to semis. Germany, Brazil will also be there...

I'm a huge soccer fan.

England has a great chance this Cup. They have quite a few stellar players.

However, Italy is one to watch as well. Very strong team.

Brazil, of course. Their roster looks like a hall of fame listing. An incredible stable of players starting with Ronaldinho.

Germany has the only advantage of being the home team but they haven't had much of a showing so far in games leading up to the Cup with their new more attack oriented style of play. They've scored more golas but have given up quite a few as well. They also have quite afew young players. However Kahn and Ballack both bring a wealth of experience.

Spain has always had a mediocre record in International play but this year they have a great mix of young and veteran players, a strong defense and a good striking duo.

Also keep an eye on Holland and the Czech Rep.

Can't wait!

I doubt very much that Rooney will be near 100% for the World Cup Art.
They may paint a pretty picture for the press but it will be a different story come game time.

I don't think anyone will beat Brazil although you can't count out Germany with home field advantage.
It worked for France.

I'm not a huge soccer fan. I used to watch when my brother was still in the country, but now I mostly watch Discovery Channel a bit before falling to sleep. That all the TV I get. :)

Now, if my country would have made it to the World Cup, I would have watched their games. As it is, I'll probably just watch the final.

Now, about the teams... I definitely like how Brazil plays. I never liked Germany's game, but somehow it worked for them.

It worked for France.
That's a memory I don't like to recall.

BLue, if Rooney isn't going to be 100% for the cup, I really doubt Owen is going to make a difference. He did not deliver during the Euro, so I don't think his "uptime" is "reliable". :D

I don't think I would want to bet the farm on Owen either.
I may be the best player in Europe but only for about 70 minutes a game.
I've never seen him play a complete 90 minutes.

What's the format Art?
Do the top 2 teams from each bracket go through or just the winner of each?
If it's the top 2 then England will be fine but if it's only the top team I would have to go with Sweden for Group B.

2 teams per group will move on.
We will have to wait and see. While England might not have Rooney, they are still a solid team. Sweden might not perform as good as they did during Euro 2004.

England will go through to the second round with this format.
They will finish second in the group though.
Sweden will win the group because they will beat England. This is the truth Art. Write it down and quote me later.

Sure thing. You want to make it more interesting and bet $1?
I say England will beat Sweden in their group match.

Michael, Sweden playing Trinidad and Tobago (TT down 1 man for half the match) 0:0 is somewhat an embarrassment, and great news for England.

I'll take that wager Art.
I don't really need the dollar, as the purpose of the bet was to make things more interesting...
England took first place in the group. And Sweden barely hold the draw. England does not yet have impressive play, but it is result-driven, which is enough until they meet their first serious competitor.

Have anyone had a chance to catch Portugal - Netherlands game? That was one crazy performance by both teams. 16 cards, 4 of them red - just crazy!

Not to be a stickler for details Art, but the wager was:

I say England will beat Sweden in their group match.

Since England and Sweden drew there is no pay out.
But maybe that's what you meant.
Tell you what. Let's go CAD $5.00 on the England/Portugal game.
England has a good advantage with all of the cards Portugal has.
I'll take Portugal and if England wins I will donate $5.00 to the Canadian Cancer Society. https://secureccs.ca/donations/donations.aspx?div=2&lang=en

If Portugal wins you have to donate $5.00 to a cause of your choice.

True, true, my mistake. But then you also said that Sweden will win the group, and they didn't. :)

Its gets trickier with Portugal. As much as I love England, and even with some star squad players on the bench, Portugal is a very dangerous team in good shape. They have been defending with man down for nearly 45 minutes, and still showcased their skill, great attacks and defending. With England not playing a convincing game, this is a close one to call.

However, I will take your bet as I believe in the team of my choice.
