Do you have your customer send in photocopy of ID?

You mean a contact form on the seller website that has attachments with ssl seal?

no most hosts will use services like WHMCS, Clientexec, Kayako that are support ticket systems that hosts should have an ssl cert for, but if they use a simple contact form that is covered by SSL then the attachments etc will be encrypted when sent.

I agree that Max Mind and telephone verification seems to handle all fraud attempts on our system. This filters all the scammers out and we haven't had many issues.

Max mind is also a pale in the ass men, please send a link where I can see the green bar

a green bar only shows that the site has an EV ssl cert, nit all sites with an SSL cert will have a green bar

you can use a service as below to check if a site has an SSL

http://www.gogetssl.com/check-ssl-installation/

it looks like maxmind had a rapidssl cert

We too used Maxmind. A lot of people know how to get around it though so we also did manual checks. We look at distance to IP, verify card information with order information, check ISP and country with account information.

This way we can almost limit all fraud. It will not however prevent all, but using both methods is near full proof as your going to get. I personally am like the CIA when it comes to orders. I check everything and in some cases request ID and scan of card (front and back). Then i look over the card provide for any proof of modification and even as far as looking up whether that is a valid card for that year lol. I just hate those chargebacks!

Please note that if you are going to be collecting photo id and card scans that you have the proper security encryption and storage in place. Nothing is worst then having that information leaked.

I agree with you 100% when taking clients card information or ID you have to make sure it is stored in a secured and right place if not then that information can get leaked and that client won't be happy because he's or her information will be out on web to everyone and they will need to do a lot in order to fix the problem.

Best solution is once that have provided you this information.

1) Take a printout of the information.
2) Make a note of the information they sent on their client account.
3) Remove the information from your computer etc.
4) Place the file in a locked/secure filing cabinet

This way if anyone does get into your server or your PC then they wont get the clients ID information

I agree. Oh he will be happy enough to sue however LOL. Just good ethics and practice to make sure everything is secure.

Most of loyal customers provide ID cards within a hours and most of try to provide a Photoshop ID Card :)

It is necessary to ask for a ID Verification.

We had a photo shopped Id sent to us a few days ago because our system detected fraud on an order. Can you guess who the guy was in the picture on the id? It was George W Bush. lol :D

The guy tried to say it was him, but I could tell it was George's official photo. And it was clearly photo shopped.

The guy was a scammer. But not a very good one.

And I doubt George Bush was signing up for hosting with us. :)

That would've been cool. Too bad the order came from Peru. Well I guess he could be in Peru at the time of the order. Or he moved to Peru.

The name on the Photo Shopped Id said George W Booker.

So it clearly wasn't him. And it wasn't the Scammer's actual id either cause the name on the id was different from the name on the order.

In our case, we find calling a customer after they have placed an order to verify it works the best. This also helps with answering any questions the customer has and verify if the order is legitimate at the same time. Helps keeps customers happy!

I'll agree that the simple call can be very useful as well. A lot of our international orders we like to just confirm identity though just to be safe...actually had one today :)
