Hey all, So starting lately ever since about last month we've been getting sales in for dedicated servers, After they use the server for about 8-15 days they open a dispute and try to get their money back has this happen to you before?

We are currently making new customers that are purchasing dedicated servers send in a photocopy of their state id, also have them sign a invoice that they paid for and on top of that have them sign our ToS and fax it to us or email, is this necessary and do other hosts take these procedures? I want to make sure that if someone does use our service for something that is against our ToS and we suspend them they wont open a dispute and try and get their money back. So say if this where to happen all I would have to do is send paypal or lets say the payment processor the files that I had him sign and then I wont have to worry about charge backs correct

thanks a lot, greg

you can have many procdures, but you cannot stop anyone from opening a dispute.

also in paypals eyes Hosting is a service (intangable item) and therefore you as a host are not covered by their seller protection just like the buyer is not covered by their buyer protection

True, you can't stop them from opening a dispute/chargeback. However if they do, with all the evidence and documents you have on file you can contact a debt collections agency and have them handle the situation.

a debt collection agency has no legal standing to recover any monies owed

We have on occasion but its only on those rare cases when the order just seems too good to be true, and we verify as best possible all new orders. For some reason this month has been a tad more flaky than the past few. Also, make sure you document everything. Its horrible to deal with paperwork but its always better safe than sorry.

We only do it now and again, we have done it on some clients who have around 6 dedicated servers and so on.

It depends what my fraud mind says.

Most of loyal customers provide ID cards within a hours and most of try to provide a Photoshop ID Card :)

It is necessary to ask for a ID Verification.

It is necessary to ask for a ID Verification.

Its not always necessary to request photo ID if you have the correct anti fraud syatem set up and working correctly. we use maxmind along with their telephone verification as we have for the last 8 years and have very few fraud orders. in the 8 years we can count actual fraud orders on 1 hand.

Indeed it is not at all, we only look at asking for it when we get co-lo or dedicated orders, which are not as cheap.

If you have a problem, give them a call and ask for ID.

If it's an expensive order, then I agree that looking at a photo id is a must. It helps protect the company at least a little bit, and doesn't help the person open up a dispute when there's tangible evidence. I've seen webhosts make the wrong decision of requiring photo id for cheaper services, and I don't really agree with that one bit. For some customers, it would be seen as a hassle for those who just want a personal or small business site. For others, they might view it as an invasion of privacy or whatnot.

Yes, we do ask for verification if their MaxMind score goes above our set limit. What is amazing is how far scammers will go to photoshop their verification.

As a customer, I would be concerned about what happens to this ID after you've verified me. One of those "I don't mind showing you, but I don't want you keeping a copy" situations.

I was under the impression that this was commonly covered in contracts signed for service. i.e., by signing this, you agree that Some Corp can do X, Y, and Z to recover any unpaid bills.

yes, but what i mean is a debt collection agency can send you a letter saying you own monies and you can simply ignore this, even if a debt collection agency rep turns up at your door you can tell him to go away. they have no legal powers to pursue the debt

We are in the UK and are registered under the Data Protection Act as all businesses that store manual or computer records of any individual are legally obliged to register.

We have to follow strict guidelines and have strict policies. on the rare ocassion we have requested ID, this ID is placed in the clients manual file and locked away in a secure cabinet and a reference is placed on their computer account to say they are verified.

there is No way you cant g'tee there are no dispute made under your clients account

no matter what you do even with photo ID a client can still dispute.

last year we had a client who had even changed his domains nameservers to ours with the information provided.

he disputed with paypal that he never received the item. I provided Paypal with a copy of his signup form, his welcome email, his account setting email, even a screenshot of the whois details showing he changed his nameservers. i also provided paypal with a screenshot of his website using our servers IP showing he was clearing using our services so received them, put paypal demanding i provide them a tracking number showing i posted the item to him. I tols paypal it was webhosting so it is a service and not a tangible item, but as i had no tracking number they found in clients favour

It is just like when the internet came out and do you remember all this coffees all of them took the pose and asked id's in order to use the pc's,well to me is the same and in the future dedicated servers are gonna be something that no one is gonna give as much importance as they do now.
To me even so nowadays I dont send signatures to nobody simply because who they are?
or am I knowing with veracity all the facts of who the company is and if the people hired are real?,to much to diccuss here

I don't think so. The world is moving in the opposite direction. Expect to see fingerprints and whatnot requested for dedicated servers in the future.

Now in some countries you could be considered a terrorist because you bought your morning coffee with cash instead of credit card ;-)
