All hosts seem to look exactly the same?

”Don’t judge a book by its cover!”

It's true there are many similar websites, but there are attractive websites also. Many hosts may look same or promise large space, but what sets a good hosting company apart is quality service.

Look of any website is not going to help us, but quality support is. It is better to research about any website and its support rather than signing up attracted by the web page. Some websites may look ordinary but may offer high quality support.

Very well said Stacy. I remember a great company (in terms of service) with a very nice website. It got bought and the old quality is apparently gone now, but the website is still the same. :)

well if a company is too cheap to have an original design than to go with an already made template....what does that tell you? I wont answer just think about it.

Why won't you answer?
I would love to know what is wrong with a template.

We use a template. Are you suggesting that our service is somehow a lesser quality because of that?

Design doesn't mean a thing. I have seen many wonderful hosting designs but the host couldn't provide service.

Perhaps you could explain how I could justify spending a few thousand dollars on a custom designed site when I already have all the business I need.
What benefit would it be for me to spend that money?

Do you think that someone will leave our hosting service if they find out we are using a template? What do you think the odds are that a potential client would look at so many of the thousands of hosting sites out there, that they would even come across 2 using the same template before choosing a host?

Hosting is a SERVICE based industry. Anyone who chooses a host based on the design of the site deserves what they get.

Design doesn't mean a thing.

I respectfully disagree. The design of your site is the first impression your potential client gets of your company.

Now, I agree that whether it's a template or not, makes not one bit of difference. However, it must be nice, and professional. If it's not, your customers get a subpar opinion of you, without even trying your service, a lot of times.

Design means a lot, where it comes from means nothing, unless it's stolen.

Of course you are right Mark.
When I say design doesn't mean a thing I should qualify that by saying that as long as the site looks professional it doesn't mean a thing.

If a site looks like it was slapped together by a school kid then it will certainly have a negative effect.

There are obviously two sides in this:

1. The customer's. Here I agree with Blue, that one should not choose a host over another, based on the looks of the website (maybe excepting the times when carelesness is too obvious).

2. The host's. The website's main purpose is to sell. That means it must look at least reasonably nice, be easy to use and informative. The choice to use a template or not is often a choice made in accordance to the target market of the host. After all, not everyone can spot a template (not to mention that some templates are not easy to spot at all). If I were to start a hosting business targeting the Romanian district where I live, a nice template would do the job just fine.

i think i said this before on another thread, google is your friend :)

always check about the company in google or yahoo.com and find out about there feedback

Design not meaning a thing is definately not the attitude to for any customer to have when looking for a particular host. I would rather go with a good-looking professional web template'd site than a geocities designed site.

It is true that most host look the same, so when it comes down to judging which one is better, make sure you know what you are looking for. Make sure your budget is together, your specs on a particular server, control panels and scripts, etc. Also as someone stated earlier, doing a background check on a particular company will aid you in your search most definately.

Basically, I would look at it this way: If a host doesn't even have time to design their own site template, then how could they have time to support your site? If they don't even bother in investing to hire a custom designer for their site, then how sure are you that they will be able to last long?

It is true that site design isn't the absolute determiner, but it still is a major factor and reflection of the host.
