50$ dedicated - is it real?

Remember that you got for what you paid. Some very big providers can do low prices on their servers because they have a big volume.

Ce n'est pas possible!

Si si, c'est possible (yes, it is possible)...
And Online is the second company in this area after OVH in France.
Their support is very slow, but the hardware is a genuine Dell (100 %), and they own one of their bandwidth providers (Free.fr)

Just like to point our that Kimsufi (Same company as OVH), offer 2GB ram dedi boxes for 14.99 GBP with a 49 GBP install fee- Scary how cheap they can make these!

Well, now if some one offers a dedicated server for $50, simply do not confuse your self by even wasting your precious time even for a second.

A server should be at least a Dual Core which can never be even in $100.

Joe's DC has dedicated servers starting at $35...

I used one of their dedicated boxes for a bit. It wasn't that bad. We're colocating with them right now, though.

There are certainly ways to make a $50 dedicated server profitable.

1) Use old hardware that has already made full ROI as introductory servers to encourage clients to upgrade later.

2) Operate a "datacenter" that is not very good (in the case of JoesDC as mentioned above he has no backup power generators and is for the most part single-homed on budget HE transit).

3) Charge large setup fees and a low monthly rate (eg: the Hetzner model).

Intel Atom is certainly possible in the $50 range. And yes, you can find dual core servers for less than $100. But depends if the server is managed.

2) Operate a "datacenter" that is not very good (in the case of JoesDC as mentioned above he has no backup power generators and is for the most part single-homed on budget HE transit).

They had issues with their UPS system a few days ago and it was really annoying to deal with. You definitely get what you pay for.

They also use a fair bit of Cogent -- not just HE.

The cost of the server hardware is quite low these days and lot of web hosts have a good SLA with their data center service provider, which allows them to cut the cost of server as low as they can. That's the reason $50 dedicated server hosting is not miracle nowadays...

We have a number of older P4's in the $50 range (and cheaper). When you own the hardware it's very easy to sell in this pricerange.

Look at it this way - 42u cabinet will run you about $600/month. Lets say we put 35 1u servers in there at $50 a pop, that's $1750/month - $600 = $1150 revenue. This doesnt count the bandwidth or admin fees, but it's very easy to make a profit on the older machines.

As Steve said, a Quad Core in the $50 range would be a tough sell, but it depends if things are being bundled with it - server management, extra bandwidth etc etc.

Going to say something similar.

You will fine they have racks, and split the rack up as their own rather than 1u space per server etc.

But you won't likely get a dedicated connection, it most likely would be shared with 40 other servers at that price, depends.
But yes, power aswel, it is a very cheap price, but it is possible, with the right brain.

Well, you get what you pay for.

$50 is a very hard deal. Unless they are able to sell plenty of such servers regularly, it doesn't get them much profit.

Some only do it as a promotional offer just to build a small client base and then jack up there prices later
