100% uptime - is that possible?

I think there have been some providers who have had 100% uptime.

They were lying then.

It is by no means impossible but all key equipment must be in place and I think luck is a big factor.

It is impossible.

But 100% up time in a year I think is possible.

No, it's not. Any reputable hosting company will not offer 100% uptime as it's unrealistic. Updates to hardware, software, and OS need to be done. That's going to cause some downtime but minimizes issues down the road. Hardware can crash or have faults. That can cause downtime. Internet connections can go down...

I could go on and on, but a good host does everything in its power to minimize downtime for its customers, but totally prevention in even the best data centers is not possible.

As far as uptime of shared host or dedicated host is concerned , there may require reboot for server either for software upgrade (kernel), hardware upgrade or in case if there is network issue.

In such situation server uptime will certainly affected. But It is possible that you can achieve 100% uptime for week, month or for months.

100% is very difficult to achieve. If you need extremely high uptime, then start looking at geographically diverse redundant clusters.

This is impossible to be done on the long term, while it could be achieved for a month or quarter, but you will face issues that enforce you to reboot at least your nodes.

A cloud hosting service will have a 99.99% Uptime SLA Guarantee.

How about posting that a cloud hosting service can have 99.99% uptime? One of the major benefits of using cloud hosting is the scalability aspect. If a server experiences issues, you're not dependent on just that server so your uptime shouldn't be compromised.

Depends on the time frame. Is 100% for one month good? 6months good? 1 year? Ive seen pingdom used on hosts and they can go 6months with 100% according to pingdom.

Pingdom currently reports my site to have 100% for the last 7 days. But looking at it for the whole month and it says 99.90% because of new upgrades, moving server etc.. i did to the server.

So it depends on the time frame your looking at.

Even servers have to sometimes be rebooted, Ksplice can help with the uptime count, but in my experience touting your uptime statistics for a server is begging for trouble. There are plenty of bugs out there that manifest itself after a few hundred days of uptime depending on the OS. A reboot every few months can also be good because a filesystem check needs to happen every once and awhile.

Just notify customers of the work to be done.

Offering between 99.95 and 99.99 is the going rate of most hosting companies. Hosts who offer 100% uptime are using it as a sale trick. Everyone wants 100% but in fairness it can't always be given.

offering 100% uptime is just a sales gimmick the same as unlimited web space and bandwidth and which people fall for every day

you can offer 100% uptime, but can you achieve it for a year?

also check the SLA's for the 100% uptime they don't usually start paying out until 95% uptime

with regard's to cloud hosting you shouldn't have downtime but SAN's, server's, software faults all affect "cloud" hosting and the setup's don't always work the way they should

I do not believe that promising 100% uptime is a good idea.
However, striving to maintain 99.9% - 99.99% is a good goal to set yourself.
You can help achieve this by closely monitoring your servers around the clock or use monitoring tools.
Receive alerts when the system goes down so you can quickly reboot it minimising the downtime period. ;)

i assume you mean services such as pingdom.

services like this cannot be 100% trusted.

i have used many and even when the server are up and running fully they will inform you the servers as down and not believe you when you can provide evidence that the server/s are fully up.

True. I use Host Tracker tool.
Nothing can be 100% trusted.
But Host Tracker is pretty reliable.

You can only do your best, remember.
It is better to watch for issues yourself.
Just use the tracking tools as a backup. :)
