Internxt sees opportunity in Canada’s data sovereignty worries

Cloud infrastructure remains one of the most concentrated corners of technology, with Amazon, Google and Microsoft collectively running much of the digital economy’s backbone. Breaking into that market looks nearly impossible on paper, yet cloud storage provider Internxt sees an opening in a frustration many enterprise customers already share: unpredictable storage costs.

Internxt, which operates services in Canada and offers Canadian server locations through its VPN on Ultimate plans, more than doubled its net revenue in 2025 and reached positive EBITDA. That performance is now fueling a push into North American enterprise markets, and Canada looks like an early test case.

Canadian organizations are moving fast on AI and digital customer services, but that pace hasn’t eased worries about governance. A recent survey found 51 percent of Canadian organizations put data sovereignty and localization near the top of their list, and 65 percent named security and cyber risk as major factors in technology decisions. Those numbers point to something simple: companies are no longer just asking whether a platform is fast or scalable. They want to know who actually controls the data sitting inside it.

That shift matters because public cloud pricing often looks simple on the surface but grows complicated in practice. Egress fees, API charges and data-transfer costs can climb sharply as volumes increase, and regulators in both Europe and North America have scrutinized whether those charges discourage companies from switching providers.

Internxt’s pitch is comparatively direct. The company offers Amazon S3-compatible storage interfaces, so existing applications and workflows need little rework, and it prices storage at seven euros per terabyte monthly with no separate ingress, egress or API fees. For finance and IT teams juggling AI and analytics growth, predictable costs are easier to budget around than scaling fees tied to usage.

Compatibility, rather than wholesale replacement, is the real strategy here. By supporting familiar storage interfaces, Internxt lets businesses test its platform without ripping out broader cloud infrastructure, which fits neatly into the multi-cloud approach many enterprises already favor for resilience and leverage.

Canada’s mix of a mature digital economy and tightening data governance expectations makes it a useful proving ground. If Internxt can win trust among Canadian healthcare, finance and public-sector buyers who demand portability and transparent pricing, that credibility could carry into its broader U.S. ambitions. AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure still dwarf Internxt in scale, and enterprise buyers move cautiously around core data infrastructure, so reliability and support will matter as much as price going forward.
