Broadcom’s vSphere Express ships now, but several VCF features are still planned

Broadcom has launched VMware vSphere Express and outlined storage, security and recovery features for VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), but only part of the package is available today. The rest depends on releases that have not shipped.

Start with what is live. vSphere Express is available now across regions and targets environments with up to 128 cores in all deployments combined. It includes vMotion live migration, automatic restart of failed virtual machines and centralized virtual switch management. Small teams will still want to ask how Broadcom counts cores across sites and what an expansion costs. VCF 9.1.1 also lets several internal teams share one central AI model stack while keeping each tenant’s context separate. That can cut duplicate GPU use, though peak demand will test the shared capacity.

Next comes what is planned. Broadcom is targeting its first fiscal quarter of 2027 for the next VCF release. Through vCenter, that release would automate more of the early AI infrastructure setup, including cluster deployment and Kubernetes provisioning. It would also add policy controls for virtual private cloud connectivity, with self service network access inside limits that infrastructure teams set. Separately, Broadcom plans native S3 compatible object storage in vSAN and native disaster recovery for VCF and vSphere Foundation.

The Advanced Services catalog holds several of the recovery and security tools. Broadcom is adding VMware Live Recovery to it, with a clean room for recovering workloads after a cyber incident. VMware HyperArmor, another catalog item, can apply virtual protections at the hypervisor and require multifactor authentication for SSH access. An outage and an intrusion call for different recovery steps, because after an attack someone must decide which copies deserve trust.

European buyers have two dates to watch. Broadcom says version 8 of vSphere Standard and Enterprise Plus stays on sale in the European Economic Area through October 31, 2027. Extended support for active subscriptions ends when the subscription does or on October 31, 2028, whichever comes first.

For anyone writing a contract now, the announcement splits into three groups: what runs today, what costs extra, and what waits for a release that has not arrived. The material does not say which planned items land in that release or what the add ons cost.
