Broadcom cuts VMware’s hardware needs by a third while adding AI defense

Broadcom just shipped a fairly dense set of updates to VMware’s private cloud security stack, and the standout detail isn’t really any single feature. It’s that the company managed to add more capability while shrinking the hardware footprint needed to run it.

The updates touch vDefend and Avi Load Balancer, both built for organizations running private cloud environments on VMware Cloud Foundation. On the security side, Broadcom introduced vDefend 1-2-3, a three-step deployment framework meant to cut down how long it takes security teams to roll out threat prevention alongside the existing Distributed Firewall. The company also added on-premises malware sandboxing, letting suspicious files get analyzed locally instead of getting shipped off to an external service, plus support for fully air-gapped environments where systems stay disconnected from the cloud entirely.

Avi Load Balancer picked up native API protection covering virtual machines, vSphere Kubernetes Services, and AI workloads specifically, pushing the product beyond basic traffic management into actual application-layer security. That shift tracks with where a lot of real attacks are landing lately, since APIs have become one of the more common entry points into private cloud infrastructure.

Both products now include an embedded AI Assistant aimed at helping IT teams troubleshoot problems inside the software itself, rather than digging through logs manually. Broadcom paired that with an updated migration tool designed to help organizations move off older, agent-based firewall products without running a lengthy manual conversion project.

Then there’s the hardware claim, which is genuinely the more interesting number here. Broadcom says a new two-node configuration for its Security Services Platform cuts physical hardware requirements by as much as 33%, according to the company’s own internal testing. That matters because private cloud teams are under real pressure to control server spending while still layering on more security controls, not less.

Customers and partners echoed that theme in their comments. Chris Steffen of EMA noted that Broadcom’s structured deployment workflow can compress what used to take months into a matter of weeks, while ThinkOn’s Ahsan Khan pointed specifically to API protection as increasingly critical for defending AI traffic running through private cloud environments.
