HostAfrica enters Tanzania, brings Africa’s first local Blackwell GPUs with it

HostAfrica just picked up its fifth country. The South African hosting provider completed its acquisition of Zesha, a Tanzanian web hosting company, marking its first move into East Africa’s second-largest economy after building out operations in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana since launching back in 2016.

The deal itself is fairly straightforward as acquisitions go: HostAfrica gets local expertise and an existing customer base in a market it’s apparently had on its roadmap for a while, and Zesha’s team joins a company with considerably more infrastructure behind it. CEO Michael Osterloh framed the move as a way to serve Tanzanian customers locally while still delivering the kind of hosting quality HostAfrica has built its reputation on elsewhere.

What makes this expansion worth watching, though, is what HostAfrica is bringing along with it. The company is rolling out Nvidia Blackwell GPUs in Tanzania, which it says are the first of their kind available anywhere on the continent. That’s a meaningful claim if it holds up, since local access to current-generation AI hardware has generally meant routing through infrastructure based outside Africa entirely.

Alongside the GPUs, HostAfrica is introducing Hbuild, an AI website builder aimed at getting entrepreneurs online quickly, and a set of one-click VPS templates preloaded with tools like Hermes, N8N, and OpenClaw. The company is also positioning its infrastructure to work directly with AI platforms like Claude and ChatGPT, letting developers manage hosting setups through plain-language instructions instead of digging through traditional control panels.

Osterloh pointed specifically to Tanzania’s growing economy as the reason the timing made sense now, calling it a market that’s long been part of HostAfrica’s broader growth plans. He said bringing AI-powered tools into the country should make it noticeably easier for local entrepreneurs to launch a web presence, while giving developers more intuitive ways to handle infrastructure that used to require more technical overhead.

With all necessary regulatory approvals cleared, HostAfrica has now formally taken ownership of Zesha and begun folding the company into its wider operations.
