Meeza, Microsoft plan a sovereign private cloud for Qatar built on Azure Local

Meeza, a Qatar-based provider of managed IT services and data centers, and Microsoft have announced plans to bring Microsoft Sovereign Private Cloud to organizations in Qatar. Azure Local will serve as the foundation, and the companies say the service will run on infrastructure that sits and operates inside the country.

The planned split of duties is clear. Microsoft supplies the Azure Local technology underneath the environment. Meeza, meanwhile, handles the Qatar-based data center infrastructure, hardware, connectivity, deployment and ongoing managed services. Customers would therefore deal with one local provider across the full lifecycle of their deployment, while keeping a consistent Azure operating model.

The target workloads are specific. The companies say the service will let customers run selected critical, regulated and sensitive workloads on cloud-consistent infrastructure deployed and operated within Qatar. That wording matters, because it points to a narrower group of applications than a general cloud migration. Organizations with strict data rules are the likely audience.

Mohamed Ali Al-Ghaithani, chief executive of Meeza, said that pairing Azure technology with local infrastructure, connectivity, data center capabilities and managed services gives customers a complete cloud environment delivered and managed in Qatar. Likewise, Ahmad El Dandachi, country general manager at Microsoft Qatar, said the sovereign private cloud brings Azure capabilities into locally operated environments and gives customers more control over where infrastructure, workloads and data reside.

The offering also supports a hybrid approach. Organizations can place each workload where it best fits their operational, security and regulatory needs, rather than moving everything to one location. For government entities, Meeza plans to connect its data center to Qatar’s Government Network. That link is meant to give eligible Azure Local workloads a dedicated route that avoids the public internet.

Notably, every detail here is still in the planning stage. The announcement does not give a launch date, pricing or a list of supported services. Buyers should also note that the connection to the Government Network is described as planned, so it is not yet a confirmed feature. Anyone considering the service will need to ask Meeza and Microsoft for those specifics before making commitments.
