Cloud market hits a half-trillion dollar run rate and AI is only accelerating it further

The global cloud market has crossed a threshold that would have seemed ambitious as a five-year projection just a few years ago. Synergy Research Group data puts Q1 2026 cloud service revenues at $129 billion, up $35 billion year on year, with a trailing 12-month total reaching $455 billion. The quarterly run rate now sits at $514 billion, meaning the industry crossed the half-trillion dollar mark in annualized terms for the first time.

What makes those numbers particularly striking is the trajectory rather than the absolute size. Q1 2026 marks the ninth consecutive quarter in which year-on-year growth accelerated, reaching 35 percent. That growth rate is the highest the cloud market has recorded since the fourth quarter of 2021, when the entire market was roughly 40 percent of its current size. John Dinsdale, chief analyst at Synergy Research Group, noted that the market is now fifteen times larger than it was a decade ago and continues expanding at that pace, with AI driving usage and unlocking new use cases that keep pulling cloud spending upward.

AWS holds the top position among hyperscalers with a 28 percent worldwide market share, though Microsoft and Google both grew faster during the quarter, holding 21 percent and 14 percent respectively. Public IaaS and PaaS services, which account for the bulk of total cloud revenue, grew 38 percent in Q1, with the top three hyperscalers together controlling 67 percent of public cloud.

The more interesting structural shift sits one tier below the hyperscalers. Five neocloud companies now rank among the top 30 cloud providers globally, with CoreWeave, OpenAI, Crusoe, Nebius, and Anthropic among the tier two names posting the highest growth rates. Neoclouds collectively account for around 5 percent of the total cloud market but hold a considerably larger share of AI-focused segments, reflecting where enterprise spending is concentrating most rapidly.

However, the United States continues to dominate on a global scale in terms of geographical penetration of the technology and had a growth rate of 37 percent during the first quarter. Among the European nations, the most rapidly growing countries were Ireland, Norway, and Poland despite the fact that the United Kingdom and Germany are the leading countries in terms of market share.
