CentralNic Reseller has started a precautionary reset of all domain authorisation codes after detecting unusual activity outside its operational systems, prompting hosting providers and resellers to take a closer look at the security of their domain portfolios. The company informed customers that it is still investigating the situation, noting that there is no confirmed impact on its systems or on customer data. Even so, it chose to rotate every auth code across its platform to stop any potential attempts to misuse domain credentials.
In its message, CentralNic Reseller explained that domains will receive fresh, unique codes automatically. CentralNic Reseller asked customers who store these codes in internal tools or older ticket systems to refresh their records, while it told anyone who relies only on CentralNic’s interface that they do not need to take any immediate steps. The company described the reset as a controlled measure taken out of caution, which suggests it is responding to activity that raised credible concern rather than treating the situation as routine maintenance.
Domain authorisation codes act as the last line of defense when someone tries to transfer a domain. Because attackers often attempt to obtain these codes before hijacking a domain, any hint of suspicious behavior can ripple throughout the hosting and reseller ecosystem.
When a code falls into the wrong hands, a customer can lose website access, email services, or even control of their brand identity. These risks explain why the industry pays close attention whenever a reseller enforces a system wide rotation.
Although CentralNic did not confirm a breach, the decision highlights how domain security has become just as critical as server security. Now, several hosting providers are intending to recheck transfer locks, update stored codes, and verify ownership contacts that everything remains the same during the rotation. The news also reminds that domain management is an additional risk vector which can silently dismantle a whole hosting stack if not kept under control.
While the probing progresses, CentralNic Reseller instructs customers to stay alert, check the settings of their domains, and confirm that no one has attempted any unauthorized transfers.
