Oracle strengthens UK cloud with AI for government, NATO

To meet changing geopolitical priorities, Oracle has extended its UK Sovereign Cloud with AI functionality that is deeper and more extensive. The announcement comes after the corporation’s commitment of $5 billion to the UK, aiming to improve the infrastructure and increase AI usage.

The launch of the new AI capabilities enables the use of generative AI tools as well as the OCI AI Agent Platform in the sovereign cloud. Governments can now make use of these technologies to harness the power of AI while also sticking to strict rules regarding the management and security of data.

The timing is notable. The announcement comes during President Donald Trump’s visit to the UK, where the United States and Britain are once again highlighting their long-standing defense partnership. Oracle chief executive Safra Catz linked the expansion to broader allied efforts, stating that cloud and AI infrastructure will play an essential role in protecting NATO members in an increasingly complex security environment.

UK technology minister Kanishka Narayan described the investment as vital for safeguarding citizens. He stressed that Britain and the United States have faced global threats together for decades, and that artificial intelligence can now serve as a critical tool in ensuring continued cooperation and protection.

NATO has already signaled trust in Oracle’s sovereign platform. Not long ago, its Communications and Information Agency has given the green light for the transfer of important work functions from local systems to Oracle’s cloud located in the UK. The French defense company Thales will supervise the integration, while the Belgian telecom firm Proximus will handle network connectivity, ensuring continuity of operations.

Different US tech firms, however, are also intensifying their foothold in the UK. Microsoft will construct a $15 billion AI supercomputer, CoreWeave will expand local data centers with a $2 billion investment, and Google has formally opened a new site in Hertfordshire.
