Toronto’s Spencer Building Carrier Hotel expands data center capacity to meet growing demand

The Spencer Building Carrier Hotel (SBCH) in Toronto is making waves with its bold new data center expansion, aiming to address rising global data demands. This ambitious project will add two new data halls, collectively providing 5MW of additional power and 23,000 square feet of contiguous space.

Combined with the existing 3MW capacity in Harbour Centre, this expansion underscores SBCH’s commitment to innovation and adaptability in a rapidly evolving industry.

The first hall, offering 2.5MW of power, is already available for concurrent build-out, while the second, slated for 2027, promises to double this capacity. Moreover, these halls feature scalable configurations, supporting up to 40kW per cabinet to accommodate businesses with diverse needs.

According to Scott Despot, SBCH’s director of business development, this initiative comes at a crucial time. “Today’s businesses, whether global enterprises, cloud providers, or AI developers, face escalating data demands alongside rising costs for services,” he explained. “With this expansion, we’re redefining what it means to establish a footprint in Toronto.”

Historically, the Spencer Building has been an iconic landmark since its construction in 1926. Once a department store and later a university campus, it has evolved into a modern hub for digital connectivity. The facility currently supports a 10MW, 43,000-square-foot data center and includes Colo5 and MMR5 services, which enhance colocation and meet-me-room offerings.

Significantly, SBCH’s efforts align with the growing demands of industries such as AI and cloud computing. By leveraging its unique location adjacent to Harbour Centre, home to major players like Cologix and Cyxtera, SBCH positions itself as a competitive force in Toronto’s tech ecosystem.

As the project unfolds, it promises not only to meet the challenges of escalating data needs but also to set a new benchmark for scalable, flexible, and cost-effective solutions in the industry.
