Liquid Web’s ‘optional’ WordPress plugin switch turns automatic on November 16

Liquid Web described the move to its new WordPress plugin plans as voluntary in May. From November 16, subscriptions to LearnDash, The Events Calendar and Give shift at renewal to one package that also includes Kadence, starting at $350 a year for one site.

Liquid Web, which One Equity Partners bought in 2023, no longer sells a premium version of any of the four products on its own. The company offers them under its Nexcess brand. Its guide says it is retiring individual subscriptions as licenses renew, and customers keep their current rate until their present billing term ends. Existing Kadence subscriptions and lifetime licenses are exempt.

Every plan covers all four products with every premium feature, so only the number of sites sets the price. One site costs $350, up to 10 sites cost $599, up to 25 cost $799, up to 50 cost $899 and up to 100 cost $999.

Whether that counts as an increase depends on what a customer pays today. Liquid Web’s August list prices put LearnDash and The Events Calendar at $259, $399 and $599 across the Essentials, Pro and Elite tiers, and Give at $199, $399 and $599. Against those, the one site package costs $91 more than Essentials for LearnDash or The Events Calendar and $151 more for Give, yet it undercuts Pro and Elite. That comparison uses list prices only, so older plans may differ.

Customers do not have to act. They get an email with their plan, sites, price and renewal date, then a reminder 30 days before the charge. Anyone with several affected subscriptions moves to the package at the first renewal, and Liquid Web cancels the rest. Customers can cancel before renewal, and a site keeps working after a lapse, but it loses support, automatic updates and security patches, and the old terms do not come back.

The change skips unlimited site licenses, Multisite licenses for The Events Calendar and accounts with more than 100 active licenses.

The tone has shifted since May. Back then, it said pricing, renewals and plans would stay the same for anyone who kept them. Now its guide presents the package as the one standard plan. Customers who read the May wording as a promise now face a move at their next renewal.
