CloudFest Americas 2026

Cloud revenue jumped 55%, and the data center boom is only half the story

Cloud customers just got a bigger tab. Synergy Research Group says customers worldwide spent $168 billion on cloud infrastructure services in the third quarter of 2026, which is 55% more than twelve months earlier. Eight quarters ago the market was half that size. Yet the growth owes as much to what providers charge as to what they build.

John Dinsdale, a chief analyst at Synergy, sees three forces at work. New capacity is arriving, prices are rising, and buyers keep trading up to AI services that cost more. Roughly one dollar in three now comes from those AI offerings. Because providers aim much of their fresh capacity at them, revenue climbs faster than floor space. For a customer, that can mean paying more for similar computing.

Still, the buildings matter. Brokerage reports show how many are going up. CBRE counted 7,481 MW under construction across eight North American markets in the first half of 2026, and tenants had already reserved most of it. JLL says hyperscalers account for 59% of tenant demand there. Meanwhile, power delays keep pushing back opening dates, so plenty of tenants wait for space that exists only on paper. Dell’Oro expects data center investment to pass $3 trillion by 2030.

The ranking at the top has not moved, but the gaps are shrinking. Amazon leads with 26%, Microsoft follows with 19% and Google with 16%. Specialist GPU clouds such as CoreWeave, Crusoe and Nebius, along with Oracle, are growing quickest after that, and Synergy says some incumbents are losing share to them.

Fast growth invites an obvious question about survival. Dinsdale doesn’t expect wreckage. If a neocloud merges or collapses, he says, other companies would buy its sites, hardware and contracts, though at uneven prices.

That outlook comforts customers more than creditors. A buyer simply finds a new landlord, while a lender who financed the original build may take a loss.
