Squarespace is cutting about 19% of its global workforce, which comes to roughly 300 people. That is nearly one in five employees. Jeff Seedman, a public relations representative for the company, confirmed the layoffs to TechCrunch after The Verge reported them first.
Seedman called it a restructuring meant to streamline operations, narrow the company’s focus and help it work more quickly as it plans for its next stage of growth. The statement TechCrunch printed never mentions AI, and Squarespace has not tied the cuts to any single cause.
The market around the company has still shifted fast. So called vibe coding tools turn a simple prompt into a working front end. Money has followed. For instance, Wix paid $80 million for Base44, and Lovable raised a $400 million Series C in August at a $13.3 billion valuation. Google also launched Stitch, a feature that generates interface designs quickly. Each one makes the case that building a site takes less skill and less time than it once did.
Squarespace has moved into AI too. It launched a tool called Blueprint in 2024 and has announced Forma, an upcoming AI native platform with an open waitlist.
Its recent history adds context. Squarespace started in 2004 and went public in 2021 at a $10 billion valuation, yet public investors showed little enthusiasm in the years that followed. In 2024, a $7 billion private equity deal took it private again.
Private ownership also means fewer public filings, so outsiders have only a short statement to go on. The reporting so far does not say which teams lose jobs, how the cuts divide across regions or whether Forma’s timeline changes. Those details will matter to customers, who will watch whether support and product updates slow down.
The cuts also land in a crowded field. Website builders now compete with tools that produce a site from a single sentence, and rivals with fresh funding can ship quickly. Squarespace has Blueprint on the market and Forma still to prove. The company has described its plan only in broad terms, so the next few months will show how much actually changes.
