InMotion Cloud swaps metered billing for one fixed bill, savings unverified

InMotion Cloud has introduced a billing model that rolls compute, storage, data transfer and senior engineer time into one committed monthly charge. The company calls it Fixed Cost Advantage, and it targets SaaS firms, digital agencies and managed service providers that want steadier cloud costs.

The pitch starts with how the big three cloud providers charge. On AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, meters track most of the bill. In practice, customers pay by the hour or second for compute, by the gigabyte and per request for storage, and by the gigabyte for outbound data once a small monthly allowance runs out. Still, committed use discounts cover only part of that. Meanwhile, AI agents and automated test pipelines add more, because each extra environment they spin up runs on the same meters.

For storage at least, a 2025 Dimensional Research survey for Backblaze found that 95% of 403 IT leaders at organizations holding more than 250TB in the public cloud reported unexpected storage charges. Backblaze sells cloud storage itself, so readers should weigh that result with care.

Under Fixed Cost Advantage, each customer picks a plan that matches its workloads. Teams can then shift resources between compute, RAM, storage and managed services without changing the rate, and a central dashboard tracks usage against the plan. InMotion says it can price this way because InMotion Hosting designs, owns and runs the hardware and network underneath, with no outside meters.

General Manager Jason Loucks says customers find hyperscalers costlier than planned and missing managed services. The model is available now on all InMotion Cloud plans, and migration help, ongoing managed services and direct engineer access over Slack come included.

InMotion also says customers can save 30% to 50% against hyperscalers, depending on the environment. However, that figure comes from the company. Its online calculator estimates savings from a customer’s current hyperscaler spending, including DevOps and SysOps work that teams handle in house, so buyers will want to test the result against their own bills.

A fixed bill works only if the plan fits the workload, so sizing becomes the main decision. The announcement does not say what happens when usage outgrows a plan, how long commitments run or what the plans cost. Until then, the model swaps surprise charges for sizing work.
