Snowflake’s compliance standard could end case-by-case cloud reviews for banks

Snowflake has launched a Financial Services Data Cloud, but a compliance milestone announced alongside it may matter more. At its virtual Financial Services Data Summit, the company also said it has met the Cloud Data Management Capabilities (CDMC) standard, an emerging effort to improve cloud data practices and regulatory compliance.

The platform builds on Snowflake’s Data Cloud, which already handles data management, governance and warehousing as software-as-a-service. Customers can load their own data and pull industry datasets from the Snowflake Data Marketplace, including Acxiom, S&P Global and FactSet.

Tom Mazzaferro, chief data officer at Western Union, explained the stakes. His firm uses Snowflake, so he has a direct interest in how regulators treat it. Regulators are still working out how to judge cloud platforms, and until now they have often assessed controls case by case. He called the CDMC framework a disruptive change because customers and regulators can agree on what compliant, secure and resilient mean across regions and clouds.

Capital One offered a practical view. Salim Syed, senior director of data engineering, said the bank uses Snowflake for warehousing and for engineering work that streamlines data transformations. Scale drives that choice. Query volumes are enormous, so the bank needs predictable performance whatever else is running. As a result, more workloads are moving to the cloud and the architecture is consolidating. Capital One is also evaluating the Data Marketplace to see how third-party data could fit.

Consolidation sits at the center of the new offering. Matt Glickman, Snowflake’s global head of financial services, said industry data forms its backbone. Because secure data sharing lets customers connect data in real time without moving it, financial datasets now come first.

Still, a standard only helps if regulators adopt it. Snowflake has not said which authorities use CDMC or how quickly others might follow. Without that, each institution still negotiates its own review. For banks running sensitive data across several clouds, the answer will decide whether the framework simplifies audits or adds another document to the pile.
