Vultr brings AMD MI355X GPUs to India, but timing stays vague

Vultr is planning a 20 MW AI supercluster in Chennai running on AMD Instinct MI355X processors. The announcement sounds significant, but it skips the details a buyer actually needs. No commissioning date, no processor count, no investment figure. Twenty megawatts signals intended scale. It says nothing about how many accelerators a customer can actually reserve next quarter, or what that will cost them.

Chennai would be Vultr’s largest AMD Instinct deployment in India and one of its two largest worldwide, next to Springfield, Ohio. Each MI355X carries 288GB of HBM3E memory and 8TB per second of bandwidth, and the site will run AMD’s ROCm software. Those specs help with large models and heavy data movement. They do not predict how a full rented cluster performs, since networking, storage and scheduling decide a lot. ROCm also offers an alternative to Nvidia’s ecosystem, but existing applications may need testing and tuning. A cheap hourly rate can turn expensive during a long migration.

For companies training models on Indian data, location may matter more than the chip. Running training, fine-tuning and inference inside the country can ease data location rules and cut response times. Even so, proximity is only half the answer. Buyers should check administrative access, support arrangements and contract terms before calling local hardware sovereign.

Vultr also updated its enterprise platform, aiming at AI agents and the people who must govern them. The additions include an OAuth provider, SCIM support and audit logs for user and agent activity. Those are standard cloud basics, and necessary ones. Security teams should still ask what the logs capture, how long they stay available and whether they feed existing monitoring tools. Vultr also describes faster volume cloning, new boot options, a revised cluster interface, planned cloud virtual private networking and Slack support, though some of these remain forthcoming.

Next year brings a separate roadmap item, with MI455X processors and AMD’s Helios rack-scale design planned for 2027. That does not describe Chennai’s hardware.

Taken together, Vultr wants a larger role in enterprise purchasing. Before reserving anything, customers should confirm whether 20 MW is initial capacity or an eventual buildout, when service starts and how much of it they will actually get.
