Scaleway picks AMD and Sweden for its first supercomputer outside France

Scaleway announced at ai-PULSE 2026 in Paris that it will deploy an AI supercomputer in Sweden powered by AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs. The French cloud provider calls it Europe’s first commercially available AMD-based AI supercomputer, and its first system outside France. Yet the announcement leaves out the numbers that would show how big it is.

Scaleway has not disclosed the GPU count, computing capacity, launch date or investment. That gap matters, because the “first” label means little without scale. What the company did share is the hardware. Each MI355X carries 288 GB of HBM3E memory with 8 TB/s of peak bandwidth, and AMD lists typical board power at 1,400 watts. The cluster will run AMD’s open-source ROCm software, which offers an alternative to Nvidia’s CUDA ecosystem.

The partner list is detailed. Bull handles integration, installation and maintenance, Giga Computing supplies the servers, HPE Networking provides Ethernet, VAST Data runs the data platform, and Motul supplies liquid cooling fluid. Sweden’s mostly low-carbon electricity and established tech sector drew Scaleway there, and the project builds on a May partnership with telecom operator Tele2.

Scaleway is not betting on AMD alone. It also plans a GPU Zone in Copenhagen built on Nvidia HGX B300 systems, with several thousand GPUs. Across Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm, the company says its GPU footprint will eventually reach tens of thousands of GPUs and tens of megawatts. That mix looks deliberate, since offering both vendors lets customers pick based on workload and supply.

Meanwhile, the wider push toward European capacity keeps gathering pace. Scaleway opened two more zones in Milan and plans three each in Stockholm and Frankfurt in 2027. In July, the European Commission opened a tender for up to seven AI Gigafactories backed by as much as €10 billion in public funding, and Scaleway’s parent iliad Group sits in a French consortium bidding for one. That bid is separate from the Swedish system.

Customers also asked for proof of trust. Copenhagen picked Scaleway in a tender, and Brussels named it among four providers in a €180 million cloud framework.

Stefan Trampus of Tele2 said the system should help local firms develop and scale AI at home. Until Scaleway publishes capacity and a date, though, this remains a promise with a strong parts list and a blank spec sheet.
