Servers.com by Nexcess sells private data center space, buyers must check the fine print

Servers.com by Nexcess has opened its Private Data Center offering to customers who need dedicated racks, networking and power distribution alongside hosted servers. The service starts at four racks and stretches isolation beyond individual machines, which lets enterprises design custom infrastructure. Buyers still have to weigh facility dependencies, operating duties and the cost of reserving capacity for their own workloads.

For companies outgrowing standard dedicated hosting, the decision now reaches past server specs. A business may need particular carriers, unusual equipment or a network layout that a catalog configuration cannot handle. This offering gives those needs a place in the design, though it also brings a larger commitment.

The name needs some unpacking. It describes a dedicated segment inside a data center, not necessarily a whole building reserved for one customer. According to the company, more than ten customers already run these environments, so the announcement widens access to an existing model rather than launching something new.

Customers can work with architects on carrier selection, direct connections, bandwidth and traffic paths. The service also supports nonstandard hardware, customer-supplied equipment and higher power and cooling per rack, and each environment gets its own quote.

Even so, dedicated switches and power distribution do not prove the whole facility stands apart. Upstream electrical systems, cooling, building access and fiber paths still deserve a close look, because a private segment can sit inside a shared failure domain. Backups and tested recovery plans remain necessary.

Cost is the other open question. Pricing is not published, so comparisons happen through quotes, and those should cover connectivity, support, equipment replacement and migration. Managed colocation or a larger dedicated deployment may be the fairer comparison, since each splits responsibility differently. Servers.com by Nexcess also offers hourly Scalable Bare Metal for extra demand, but buyers should ask how that capacity connects to the private environment.

Finally, the provider’s engineers run the environment while customers control what operates inside it. Compliance stays with the customer, and replacement hardware, emergency changes and expansion lead times should be settled before anyone signs.
