Canonical ships AI agent hosting tools, leaves the hard questions open

Canonical has released Charmed OpenShell in alpha, bringing deployment and management integrations for NVIDIA’s AI agent runtime to Kubernetes and MicroCloud. On paper, the release gives cloud operators a stack to evaluate for controlled agent execution, pairing identity management, persistent state and monitoring with the gateway that governs resource access and inference routing.

For any provider weighing agent hosting, though, the real operational challenge goes well beyond keeping an application running. An agent that can execute code or reach external resources needs enforceable boundaries, and someone still has to configure those boundaries, decide which permissions make sense, and investigate when something behaves unexpectedly. That work has to show up in the hosting bill somewhere.

Charmed OpenShell tries to make that process more manageable by connecting familiar infrastructure pieces. Canonical’s packaging links the OpenShell Gateway with services for authentication, state persistence, traffic routing and observability, which could make deployment more repeatable than piecing each integration together manually. At the same time, it hands operators several interacting components to maintain, and before offering this as a customer service, they need to understand how the whole system behaves when one piece fails.

NVIDIA OpenShell itself controls how agents execute, which resources they can touch, and where inference requests get routed. Canonical adds a deployment path through its Juju operator ecosystem, running the gateway on Canonical Kubernetes atop MicroCloud. The company has also built an LXD driver that provisions a sandboxed container for each agent execution, giving operators an isolation boundary they can test directly. Still, a sandbox restricting an agent’s environment doesn’t guarantee that an authorized action can’t produce an unwanted result, so questions about network access, file permissions and cleanup after each task remain for operators to answer themselves.

Underneath the gateway, Charmed OpenShell pulls in Charmed PostgreSQL for state persistence, the Canonical Identity Platform for authentication, Traefik for routing, and the Canonical Observability Stack for metrics and logs. Those integrations are concrete, but they also carry real ongoing costs: persistent state needs recovery procedures, monitoring needs meaningful thresholds, and logs need storage and people who can actually interpret them.

For now, Canonical’s release establishes that the software exists, not that commercial demand or profitable service economics follow automatically. Providers considering agent hosting will need to test gateway recovery and access enforcement under real failure conditions before any availability commitment means much.
