Synology’s ActiveProtect update speeds up cloud disaster recovery for hybrid IT teams

Synology just launched ActiveProtect Manager 2.0, and the update solves a problem that sounds boring until you’re the one living through a server outage at 3am: getting cloud backups back into production without routing everything through your own hardware first.

Before this release, restoring a backup stored in Amazon S3 or Azure Blob Storage meant pulling it back through on-premises equipment before it could go anywhere useful. That extra hop cost time during exactly the moment when time matters most. Now, admins can restore those cloud backups directly into Amazon EC2 or Azure VM, skipping the on-premises detour entirely.

The update also widens what ActiveProtect can actually protect. It now covers Amazon EC2, Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV and Google Workspace, on top of what it already handled. A new cross-platform recovery feature lets a company back up a workload in one environment and restore it in a completely different one, which matters for anyone migrating systems or running disaster recovery across a mixed setup of cloud and on-site infrastructure.

Storage options expanded too. ActiveProtect Vault now works with more Synology NAS models, and Azure Blob Storage joins the list of supported backup targets. Synology also added volume-level encryption, so stolen drives or lost hardware won’t hand anyone readable data or configuration files.

Jia-Yu Liu, who runs Synology’s Data Protection Group, said fragmented backup infrastructure drives up costs and slows recovery, and argued that ActiveProtect combines purpose-built storage with data management software into one predictable investment. He described version 2.0 as extending that approach across an organization’s entire hybrid infrastructure through a single, centralized system.

Synology plans to push further in version 2.1, adding AI-based anomaly detection that watches each backup for unusual file behavior, like sudden mass deletions or odd entropy shifts, and quarantines anything suspicious for a human to review. That version will also scan backups for malware using Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender or ESET before restoration, and automatically fall back to the last clean version if it finds something.

Synology gives ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 to existing DP-Series appliance owners at no extra cost, which keeps this upgrade from becoming another line item IT has to justify to finance.
