Anthropic’s $35 billion cloud deal keeps circling back to NVIDIA

Anthropic‘s latest infrastructure deal reveals something more interesting than its price tag: a $35 billion cloud agreement with NVIDIA-backed Lambda, reportedly for capacity at a Texas data center, that traces back to NVIDIA at nearly every point in the chain. The Wall Street Journal first reported the deal, and Reuters later confirmed it through a source familiar with the matter, though neither Anthropic nor Lambda has announced it publicly, and no detailed terms have surfaced.

The infrastructure sits at a Nueces County, Texas facility that Hut 8, a former bitcoin miner repositioning toward AI infrastructure, is developing. Lambda plans to deploy roughly 350 megawatts of NVIDIA-based compute there. NVIDIA backs Lambda financially, supplies the hardware, and holds a separate relationship with Hut 8 around the same capacity, which makes the deal less a simple cloud contract and more a snapshot of how tightly the money now flows in a single direction.

This isn’t Anthropic’s only major infrastructure bet, either. The company reportedly agreed to a $45 billion, six-year cloud deal with Nscale in West Virginia earlier in August, and Amazon has said separately that Anthropic plans to consume more than $100 billion in AWS infrastructure over the next decade, including five gigawatts of capacity and Amazon’s own Trainium chips.

Taken together, these commitments look less like routine cloud procurement and more like long-term capacity reservation, one Anthropic locks in years before a 350-megawatt data center can even finish construction. Traditional cloud elasticity assumes capacity already exists. Deals like this one assume it doesn’t yet, and that somebody has to build it first.

NVIDIA’s fingerprints are hard to miss throughout. It invests in cloud providers like Lambda, its chips run inside their infrastructure, and it maintains ties to developers like Hut 8 who are securing the underlying capacity. That circularity has drawn scrutiny from investors questioning how much AI infrastructure demand is genuinely organic versus supported by companies with financial ties back to NVIDIA. NVIDIA has pushed back on suggestions that these relationships manufacture demand artificially, and nothing in the Anthropic deal alone proves otherwise. Anthropic clearly needs the compute.

What’s harder to answer is what happens to these bets if AI models grow dramatically more efficient, or if demand simply doesn’t show up as fast as the contracts assume.
