Contabo splits its VPS lineup into three, and rising hardware costs are why

Contabo just rebuilt its entire VPS lineup from the ground up, replacing a single catch-all product range with three distinct lines: Core VPS, Performance VPS, and Max Performance VPS. The reasoning behind the split is straightforward once you think about it. A basic WordPress site and a production AI application have almost nothing in common in terms of what they actually need to run well, yet plenty of hosting providers still sell them the same generic server.

Core VPS sits at the entry level, aimed at workloads that don’t need much horsepower to run reliably. Think standard web hosting, WordPress and other CMS platforms, email servers, and development environments where cost matters more than raw performance. It’s the tier for people who want something dependable without paying for capacity they’ll never touch.

Performance VPS steps things up with newer AMD EPYC processors, NVMe storage included by default, and network bandwidth up to 1 Gbit/s. Contabo is positioning this tier for small businesses and development teams running things like growing databases, CI/CD pipelines, API-heavy applications, and increasingly, AI agent frameworks, without pushing customers into premium pricing just to get there.

Max Performance VPS, previously sold under Contabo’s VDS branding, sits at the top and gives customers dedicated CPU and RAM rather than shared resources. That isolation matters for production environments where performance interference from other virtual machines on the same hardware could actually cause problems, things like high-traffic platforms, multi-tenant SaaS applications, real-time processing systems, and lighter large language model workloads.

The timing here isn’t incidental. Contabo says the restructuring comes as hosting providers across the industry deal with rising hardware and memory costs, and splitting the portfolio lets pricing reflect what different workloads genuinely require instead of forcing everyone into one configuration.

Practically speaking, the new structure gives customers a clearer upgrade path as their needs change. Start on Core VPS for a basic site, move to Performance VPS once traffic or complexity grows, and shift to Max Performance VPS when a workload needs guaranteed, isolated resources. Rather than overpaying upfront or hitting a wall later, customers can match infrastructure to what they’re actually running at each stage.
