Contabo crosses 500,000 VPS as it expands its one-click app lineup

Contabo has reached 500,000 active Virtual Private Server instances, a milestone the hosting provider is marking alongside a year of product additions aimed at extending what a single server can do without requiring customers to assemble the pieces themselves.

The company built its reputation on affordable VPS pricing, and reaching half a million active instances suggests that approach has held up against more established competitors. The bigger story this year, though, sits in what Contabo added around the core hosting product rather than the raw server count itself.

In April, the company launched Contabo Firewall, a network-level firewall included by default with every VPS and VDS instance, both new orders and existing servers. The firewall blocks all inbound traffic until a customer sets specific rules, and management happens entirely through the Customer Control Panel rather than requiring direct iptables configuration. Notably, this was the first product to come out of Contabo Labs, the company’s newly formed in-house development team, which signals an intent to keep building features internally rather than relying solely on third-party integrations.

The company has also been expanding its library of one-click applications, the pre-configured software packages customers can deploy directly from the server configurator or through reinstallation. Five new additions joined the existing lineup of Nextcloud, WireGuard, n8n, OpenClaw, and Coolify this year: Hermes, an AI sales assistant; Paperclip, a self-hosted document and notes manager; Dokploy, an application deployment tool; Ollama, for running open large language models locally; and Zeroclaw, a self-hosted private AI assistant. Each installs with secure default configurations already applied, removing much of the setup work that typically separates a bare server from something a customer can actually start using.

The pattern across both additions points to a consistent product direction. Rather than treating server delivery as the end of the customer relationship, Contabo appears focused on extending value after the initial purchase, through built-in security and faster paths to deployment for commonly requested tools. For a company competing largely on price against larger cloud providers, that kind of ongoing feature expansion gives customers a reason to stay beyond the initial cost comparison.

Whether the company can sustain that pace of development while continuing to scale its infrastructure footprint is the next question worth watching.
