Nigerian data no longer has to leave Nigeria to reach the cloud

AFRICLOUD just turned on a third region, in Lagos. For businesses actually operating in Nigeria, this isn’t really news so much as it’s useful: cloud servers can now sit inside the country, hosted out of a carrier-neutral facility downtown, and anyone can order one through the same dashboard AFRICLOUD has always used.

Up until now, most Nigerian companies hosting data online had to send it abroad by default, since local infrastructure at this scale simply wasn’t available. That mattered less when compliance rules were looser, but it matters a lot more now. The Nigeria Data Protection Act asks a fairly direct question: where does the data actually live? For companies working under NDPA, or dealing with regulators and customers who care about data location, “somewhere in Nigeria” is now a real answer instead of an aspiration.

AFRICLOUD’s founder, Oluniyi Ajao, put the shift plainly, noting that Nigeria is Africa’s largest internet market, yet most of its digital workloads have historically run on servers outside the country. Lagos changes that default, giving local businesses infrastructure actually built around how the market operates and pays.

That gives them three regions total, alongside Lisbon and Johannesburg. Johannesburg has been the anchor for Southern and East Africa. Lagos now handles Nigeria and most of West Africa — and it’s got a terrestrial fiber run straight into the Sahel, a path that used to require going through Europe first. Lisbon’s territory is North Africa, part of West Africa, and Europe, with a subsea cable out to Brazil.

There’s no hardware trade-off between regions. Same AMD EPYC chips, same NVMe-only drives everywhere, IPv4 and IPv6 both supported, and a new box goes from zero to booted in a few minutes. The difference is legal, not technical. Same account, but a server in Lagos falls under Nigeria’s NDPA, one in Lisbon falls under EU data protection law, and one in Johannesburg falls under South Africa‘s POPIA. You get three jurisdictions without opening three accounts or dealing with three different providers.
