Dave Brown, the AWS executive who’s spent nearly two decades helping build Amazon’s cloud business, is reportedly leaving for Meta, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke to the Wall Street Journal.
Brown will report to Meta’s head of infrastructure and focus specifically on the company’s data center buildout, the Journal reported. Meta hasn’t confirmed the move publicly yet. Amazon addressed Brown’s departure earlier this week through an internal letter that CEO Matt Garman sent to staff. Garman credited Brown’s 19-year run at the company but never revealed where he was heading next, calling it only “a new role outside of the company.”
Brown himself reflected on the exit in a note that read less like corporate boilerplate and more like someone genuinely closing a long chapter: “Looking back over the last 19 years, I can’t imagine having spent them anywhere else,” he wrote, tracing his path from an early developer working on EC2, Amazon’s foundational cloud computing service, all the way up through nearly two decades of building infrastructure that millions of people now rely on daily.
AWS has already named his replacement. Dave Treadwell, currently the company’s SVP of e-commerce foundation, will take over as lead of the compute and machine learning services team Brown previously ran.
The timing here is what makes this worth watching closely. Meta has made no secret of its cloud computing ambitions, already standing up a dedicated division called Meta Compute earlier this year. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said the unit plans to build “tens of gigawatts this decade, and hundreds of gigawatts or more over time,” numbers that put Meta’s data center ambitions in the same league as the hyperscalers it would presumably compete against.
Hiring away one of AWS’s most senior compute executives, if the report holds up, would send a fairly clear signal about how seriously Meta is taking that ambition. Building a cloud business from scratch is one thing; building it with someone who spent 19 years running a piece of the world’s largest one is a different kind of head start entirely.
