UpCloud’s founder takes CEO seat to lead its next cloud chapter

UpCloud just handed leadership back to the person who started the whole thing. Joel Pihlajamaa, who founded the Finnish cloud company in 2011 and has served as its Chief Technology Officer since, steps into the CEO role effective immediately, succeeding Arno Schäfer.

Schäfer’s tenure wasn’t a quiet one. Under his leadership, UpCloud posted significant revenue growth and sharpened its positioning as a European sovereign cloud provider at a time when data residency and local infrastructure control started mattering far more to enterprise buyers than they once did. His departure appears to be a planned transition rather than an abrupt change, and his own statement reflected that, describing the handover with confidence rather than the careful corporate language that tends to accompany messier exits.

For Pihlajamaa, the shift from CTO to CEO is less a change of role than a change of title. He shaped the company’s engineering culture, product direction, and strategic identity for more than a decade before this appointment. The engineering-first mindset that UpCloud built its reputation on came largely from his influence, and that continuity is precisely the point of the move.

“From day one, our goal has been to build cloud infrastructure we’d want to use ourselves,” Pihlajamaa said, adding that staying true to the engineering and customer-focused principles that drove early growth remains the priority as the company heads into its next phase.

The timing connects to a broader shift in how European organizations approach cloud infrastructure. Sovereignty requirements, driven partly by regulatory pressure and partly by geopolitical caution, have pushed more buyers toward providers that can guarantee their data stays within European jurisdictions and under European operational control. UpCloud has spent years working toward that position, and having its founder drive that push carries a weight that most hired executives simply cannot match.

For existing customers and partners, UpCloud is framing the transition as continuity rather than disruption, the same platform and the same commitments, with the person most responsible for building both now directly in charge of where it goes next.
