Anyone who’s managed their own VPS knows the particular dread of a 2am outage with no one to call. That’s the trade-off with self-managed hosting: full control, but also full responsibility when something breaks. Hostinger has spent the past two years trying to soften that trade-off with Kodee, its AI assistant, and new usage data shows just how much the tool’s role has shifted.
Kodee started in 2024 as a basic chat assistant inside hPanel. It could answer questions and point users toward help articles, but it couldn’t actually see or touch a customer’s server. Anything technical still required the customer to do the work themselves, often after a long back-and-forth that, according to Hostinger’s own numbers, averaged nearly five hours for a single tricky security issue.
That changed in April 2025, when Hostinger connected Kodee to servers through the Model Context Protocol, letting it view live server data and actually carry out fixes, like creating firewall rules or rotating SSH keys, instead of just suggesting them. A year later, Kodee moved into the VPS terminal itself, where it can run commands and deploy applications directly.
The results are the part worth paying attention to. Across more than 914,000 VPS conversations over six months, Kodee resolved 91% of cases with a clear outcome entirely on its own, with only 7% needing a human agent. Server optimization questions that used to take 48 messages now average around 15. Retention among VPS customers rose from roughly 66% to 70% over the same period, even as Hostinger’s user base grew larger and notably less technical.
Kodee still hands off the trickier stuff: account suspensions, active DDoS attacks, anything involving billing policy or a customer who specifically wants to talk to a person. That’s by design rather than a limitation, since those situations genuinely call for human judgment.
What this points to isn’t that running a server stopped requiring any skill. It’s that the floor for getting started just dropped considerably, and the work of keeping a VPS running no longer has to be a solo job at 2am.
